  • XJ 1100 First gear crunch

My first gear seems to have gone out.

When I attempt to take off in first gear, I get a crunching noise and the gear slips, sometimes it will lock down and I have to slightly pop the clutch a little to bump it loose.
Then I can take off in second, but I know that isn't too good for the clutch.

I have never claimed to be a mechanic, and I have never tried tearing into a transmission before.
When I first happened upon XS11.com, I found a second gear "fix", but the link I had then will not work anymore.

Any ideas for a possible fix/cost?

Read the transmission repair articles on Ken Talbot's page at
    http://www.rctvonline.net/xs11/

One of the articles has part numbers for most commonly worn parts:

Check with Zanoti Motors for prices. Some folks have replace the shift cam (drum) assembly, part # 2H7-18540-00-00, as part of a tranny rebuild.

In some cases it is cheaper to find a blown engine with a good tranny to rob parts out of, but you can never be sure of what you are getting ths way.

You might be lucky enough that your problem is in the shifter rather than the transmission. Have a good read over this article before you start ripping into anything. Let me know if you run into trouble with any of the 2nd gear links on the pages at rctvonline.net

The article(s) refer to the second gear, but all my gears except first work great.

After the sun goes down some and it cools of a bit, I will go tear off the shifter panel and see what I can find.

        Thanks a ton Y'all!

          Hey there STF,

We had put up a recent addition to the Tranny tech fixes which covered the 1st gear fix, but apparently it got lost during our recent hacker attacks of the past few weeks!?!?

I've done the Dremmel fix on 3 bikes, 2 XJ's, 1XS, with the 1st gear malady you mention. It's a little tougher to grind the dogs and slots on the 1st/4th gear combos since they are solid, and not hollow/thru and thru like the 2nd/5th gear combo, but it can be done! I learned how by reading Ken's tips, and just adapting the process to the gears I found damaged, after looking at the diagrams so I could figure out which was 1st and what gear meshed with it!

I don't know if JP has a backup of that tech tip? I think there may still be one in the "Under Construction" section that only the moderators can access. Hopefully JP, or Mr. Hart, or Gary66 will read this and be able to pull it up and put it in the tech tips section, I don't have those privileges!!
