I just bought a headlight housing for my 79F on ebay (item #2483648070) and it does not fit on what I assume to be the orignal mounting ears. The back of the housing hits the frame before the mounting holes align with the ears. I bought the bike with a fairing on it, so I don't have the original housing to compare. Are the housings the same for mutiple years (thus I was sold the wrong housing) or do they differ from year to year? The one I got has a round raised area where the mounting bolts come through the housing, but the one in the Clymer manual does not appear to have this raised area. Thanks.

Hey there Luxury,
If the headlight housing you got is ROUND, then you got the wrong type....for an "SF", special, instead of your Standard which takes the SQUARE type. I'll go look at the Online Yamaha parts catalog and check out a few different year models and their part numbers to verify, but I think most of the Standards used the same size, type! Yes, they all use the exact same housing assembly, 78-81 HTH.

BTW, I don't have one for you, but if the one you have IS round, and in decent shape, not badly pitted, I'd be willing to take it off your hands for the right price!?Last edited by TopCatGr58; 07-18-2004, 11:09 AM.T. C. Gresham

Your bike may not have the correct mounts or they might be installed upside down.

My mounts look just like the ones on the Standard in the Clymer manual and are at the same orientation. But when I try to install the headlight housing, the back hits the head tube before the holes line up with the mounts. The housing also seems to be too wide - it would cause the mounts to be spread out at the front.
The housing is plastic and has a square hole in the back and a square hole in the bottom to route wiring. Does this sound right? Thanks for the info!Frank

Looks like a Standard light. Mine has been off for so long I don't really recognize it. I don't recall mine having plastic on the back, though. Luxury, are the 'ears' still on your upper forks, where the light should mount? I recall some folks take them off when they put a fairing on.
I'll check mine tonight if I get a chance.Marty in NW PA

Hey Luxury,
Can't help you with the headlight. I also have a 79F, but I put a Suzuki headlight on it, then added a wixom fairing.
Anyways just wanted to say hi. I'm up in Rice Lake, about 45 miles north of you.Kevin

I dug mine out, and it is different. I have a big up / down adjuster on the bottom of mine, you should be able to see it in the backside photo on ebay. And I have three holes in the back of mine. Also there is a large bolt sticking out of the center bottom in the ebay photo, I don't have one of those. And the large hole in the back has two recesses on mine, that ebay one has only a square hole.
Let me qualify my observations. I have a pile of parts, but I am pretty sure this one I have is off my 78E.
Maybe the 79-80 had a different mount? Or is it off of a 750 or 850?

The pictures are not all that good and it's hard to tell what it's off of.
