  • Oil Change

I bought a 1980 XS1100LG Midnight Special earlier this summer and love riding it. I don't have a Clymer's Manual yet, so if anyone knows what type and how much oil to use along with the torque specs for the bolts, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

    Torque

Oil filter houseing bolt 23 ft lbs
Drain plug bolt 31 ft lbs
If you look on the engine it will tell you how much oil you need right by the plug where you put the oil in. That is going to be how much you need if you change the filter. HTH ...............MITCH

4 quarts. Then check the site glass (right side of the bike, by the lower frame).

I run Castroil...15w-40 or 20w50, and have for years. I've had bikes go in excess of 100,000 miles with no rebuilds...but oil is religion.

Midnight Specials are the best! Enjoy it!

I used to use Honda HP4 motorcycle specific oil and found that I was wasteing my money. I now use Casrol GTX 20-50. Their is a motor oil comparison test here in this forum that will shed some light on the difference between the different motor oils. (ie car vs motorcyle specific ) MIYAMI take aprox 3.5 quarts with a filter change. my torks are German specs. Good-n-tight.
There is also a page on this forum that will give you the specs on making a gauge ( if you don't have one in your tool kit ) to check the levels of the middle drive and final drive oil levels. I made mine out of an old hacksaw blade and one rivet. Those will take a good quality 80/90 WT. if you can't find the specs on the gauge let me know and I'll scan the page I've got and post it.
