  • where to get a 80 XS1100 SG turn signal flasher unit?

...located under the seat, on the right hand side is a 3-wired flasher unit/canister - one side of mine is weak; it works if you rap on it with a screwdriver, wrench, etc...
...my question: do you have to buy one from the dealer (*IF* it's still available), or is there a suitable replacement out there?? TIA

Nah, I'm guessing any 3 legged automotive flasher will work. Only problem I've ever had was on my dirtbike, which had a 6 volt system. One leg is usually for the pilot light, and the other is for the main system, and the other is the power supply/ground.

Wagner probably makes good ones, used as OEM quite often, but I've seen a "NAPA" flasher, probably works equally well.

Hope someone can chime in to verify that, though.

      flasher

they were still available from dealer, but kinda pricey. u can use one for cars but will lose self cancel function can plug car one in 1 of 2 ways. one way will work one won't.

As Graybird states, the OEM's are rather pricey around $80+. CRXSi90 is not quite correct, you can't use the auto 3 prong type, you need to get the basic 2 prong, and then you will have your blinkers back, but you will loose the self cancelling feature. If that feature is worth $80.00, then by all means get the Yamaha OEM one, otherwise, the other solution!

ONE side of the flasher CAN'T can't be bad. The flasher unit is a single unit. It is switched into either circuit by the turn signal switch. If the flasher works at all, it's good. If I were you, I'd be checking my gounds and every connection in between on that "bad" side.

Randy, one side works perfectly, the other side *will* flash on and off *if* the bike is in motion (vibrations) but will only *turn off* (not flash) and if I 'tap' on the flasher unit I can hear the relay clicking, and the light will 'flash' off and back on... then stop, light on. ...and after tapping on it again it will click, and the light will turn off and flash back on - then stay on... the unit is over 24 years old, the bike has >40k miles on it, the flasher's worn out.

I've had Harleys and BWMs from the 1950s, but they didn't have turn signals... and my 1957 and 1961 trucks have a more 'basic' electrical system... so this is a 'modern' system that I'm constantly learning new...

I still say the flasher's not worn out if it works on one side and not the other. Your problem is in the wiring between the flasher and the rest of the circuit.

When I put MIYAMI back together the left side would flash but the right would not. Found out I put the front right faring bulb in backwards. The unit would click, the light would come on but would not flash. No problems now. If thats not the case with yours, I would be checking the connections by the flasher unit. Sound like you might have a bad connection.

For a couple of bucks, get a 12v 2 prong from the autoparts store and try it. This will tell you for sure if the flasher is bad.
