  • mercury sticks

Anyone got an address for a supplier of mercury tubes(sticks) so I dont have to go to the garage and borrow them again......I bought some vacuum gauges on ebay but they dont have dampers which make them kinda useless unless of course I could create dampers, no doubt one of you out there could build them.
Anyway I set the carbs with the mercury sticks and they worked just great....... I tried searchin on ebay for them but no luck.

Bruce, here's one place Morgan Carb Tune and I'm sure there are more.

I too have the vacuum gauges. I bought them because I didn't want to mess with the mercury. JC Whitney a few years back, think they were about $40US or so. You should be able to make dampers easily. Mine are just small plastic valves that go inline between the engine and gauges. I would try a pet store or aquarium supply house. Get 4 of the valves that control air flow. You might have to fab up some adapters due to different sized tubing, but I think it should work.

      Thanks Brian

Thats an idea! Will try a pet store and see what they have in the way of valves before I write-off the gauges....thanks for the link to Morgan Carb tune........

Along with syncing the carbs I replaced the plugs and colortuned each carb, what a difference once its all done!

Even simpler, Bruce - drill a small hole in a piece of plastic that you can stuff into the vacuum lines that feed the gauges. That's how my set of mercury sticks is dampened.....

          Dampening

That I can try by removing a vacuum connection on one of the engine boots and hooking-up one of the gauges; thanks Ken......last time I synced the carbs when the engine was nicely warmed up my gauges were drawing about 25 to 26 ins of vacuum while using the sticks this time, the values were the same........while the engine got hotter and the garage as well, I was getting into the hi 30s of vacuum, I then decided to let the engine cool and have lunch and finish later.........give that a try tonight since its raining.

Mark Robertson and I often get together on Thur. evening at one of the local fast food outlets. Most nice days there are usually 200 bikes of all breeds, mostly Wings and HDs, some Brit bikes, 15 to 20 BMWs plus an odd assemblage of sport bikes but never have I seen a 78 XS1100 there, even XJs are rare now. Some of the "Old timers" who stop by my bike still recognise an XS1100 and those are the Guys who spend some time checking out the Eleven and reminice with me about there Yamahas. These old bikes are'nt as pretty and chromy as whats on the hiway now, and maybe they've lost some of there steam, but hell, there still admired by many, and there a a ton of fun to ride!

          Amen

            hi kids
I built mime using a gang valve for the air bubbler for an aquarium use one valve per carb , and one between the gang valve and the vacuum valve,I just close the valve slowly till it stops being A.D.D. ;-)
I will try and get a picture later
