  • leaking petcock solution

I have a 79 special, bought at a fair price, but also needed some tlc. One problem I had was holes in the carb floats, After cleaning the carbs, and reinstalling them, the bike ran great for the first ride. After sitting for a couple of hours, the bike would start up, and run rough as hell, with black smoke from the exhaust. Then I tried the boiling water trick, and found three small pinholes in two of the floats. Fixed these, and it ran great, but the petcocks continued to dribble all the time. Being afraid of gas into the crankcase, I went to the local napa parts store and bought two lawnmower petcocks. these were plastic, with 1/4 inch hose nozzles on each end. With some 1/4 inch fuel line, I ran the right side from the gas tank across, and down between # 2 and #3 carbs, then installed one of the new petcocks under carbs 1 and 2 , and then ran fuel line up on the outside of carb #1 pulled tight against the carb to keep from looping out, over top of carb #1, and down between carb 1 and 2 onto the fuel inlet nozzle. this same setup was repeated on the left side. so end result was left side petcock feeds carbs 3 and 4, and right side petcock feeds carbs 1 and 2. the new fuel cocks only cost about 6$, along with the 1/4/ inch fuel line, and some hose clamps, total , about 10$
It looks ok, and works great, no problems for 1,000 miles. this will work until I can install new petcock kits.

    There is Always a Way!

Thats what I like. Innovation! Having spent about 20 years of my life hauling racing cars all over North America and racing in some very out of the way places you soon learn to be innovative or you tow home a lot without ever turning a wheel on the race car.
