  • Gear oil

I was recently told that the current gear oil rating (GL-5) is corrosive to aluminum. Is this true/what should I use?

In my opinion, Theres not much for any oil on the market today that will be corrosive on aluminum. Just about evreything made today (ie gear housing, clutch housing, ect.. ) are made of aluminum. If you have any doughts, Take a scrap piece of aluminum and let it sit in the oil for a year or so while still useing the oil that you've been using. Aluminum is made up of alot of different metals, ( magnesium, nickle, zink, and so on..) I used to haul alot of aluminum prducts for Mag corps. ( magnesium Corporation of America ) . Hopefully with this name it will lead you in the right dirrection to do your homework. I do know for a fact that different products require different types of aluminum so the mix of metals will be slightly different to get the metals to what the manufacturer wants.
