  • Wiring in a rev limiter?

O.K. This is a question to the electrical experts on this website. I know there's a few of you. Anyone got any ideas on making a simple rev limiter for the ignition? Could it be simple? A 9000 rev cut-off would be good to have - missed gears and all that. All the modern bikes have them - my XS wants one too! Anyone got any clues?

Put two wires in the rev counter and set them to make contact at 9000 rpm, wire them to the killswitch....
    OK, a cartoon kinda solution.

Well, connecting some type of gadget to the kill switch is a start. Thinking thinking...

        Hey there PGG,

I would think that you would need some type of after market tachometer type gauge that works off of the coils to truly sense the actual rpms, and then some programmable chip that would switch off power when it sensed the rpms reaching that set rpm limit. Needing to have a computer chip in it takes it out of the "Simple" solution, but may still not be too expensive?

I have an MSD 6AL with the "soft touch rev limiter" on my MG which is also a 4cyl. It is a complete Ign system with a built in rev limiter. It works by dropping cylinders alternately rather than killing the whole engine at once. The revs are limited but all you notice is a sort of flutter in the engine. What you are talking about is killing the whole engine and once the revs drop it will light back up and climb to 9 grand again provideing the throttle hasn't returned. This will cycle very fast and would occur many times before you could react. IMHO. fliping the ignition totally of & on repetedly at that rpm could have the potential for causeing more damage than the over rev. Like I said, just my opinion.

Polystyrene wedge glued to your wrist joint so you can't bend it back so far (just hold your right wrist with your left hand and you will see what I mean)
