  • vibration passenger pegs

Been browsing and notice some info on engine vibration and onder how smooth the 1100 engine should be? At between 5000 and 6000 RPM the passenger pegs vibrate to the point your feet don't touch. I have done the timing chain adjustment several times both cold and hot with no change. Let's see about 20k total miles and I have noticed some slack in the drive, ie. on the center stand in gear I can rotate the rear tire about 1/8 turn free. No give in the u-joint. Just how smooth should this bike be? XJ1100

Have you checked to make sure the pegs are mounted tight?Sounds like the mount or footpegs might be a tad loose.I have not had any troubles of that sort or I just have not noticed it one. Will the pegs vibrate with the bike on the centerstand?More than likely it is caused by something minor witch can be hard to track down.I use the passenger pegs to strech out on when riding a distance since not many people like my driving .My bike has over 40k on it and is reasonably smooth,it`s no Gold Wing but it suits me alright.Take your time it is in the mounts more than likely.Hope this helps.

      Rear Wheel Play

Guy, the excessive back lash at the rear wheel (1/8 turn back and forth) is a common complaint. Most of us who have checked this report an excessive amount. Does not seem to affect anything. I think Ken Talbot figures it is the number of points that could cause it between the wheel and the primary chain. Like, rear hub, rear end, U-joint, intermediate gear, excessive play in the trans gear shift cogs, back lash in the clutch basket and finally, stretch in the primary chain before you finally start to fight compression at the pistons.
I discovered this on the Ratbyk a couple of years ago. Put it out of my head and ignored. 2 years and 16,000 kmn later and no change and no problem. Suggest you put it out as well.
      Truck on.
So far as vibration at the passenger foot pegs. Have not noticed any on my bike. Feels just about right/normal for a transverse 4 cyl. First place I would check is the exhaust mounting., (muffler to the aluminum bracket that carries both the pegs and muffler.

As far as the slack from crank to rear wheel, just thought that might be a source of the vibration at the rear pegs, I am of the opinion it is in the primary drive chain. Hasn't slowed me any.
as for pegs they are tight have even tried a pair of ISO pegs. I have had all the aluminum parts off and cleaned , polished and clear coated. I lost (somewhere on the road) the left muffler mount bolt by the passenger peg and didn't notice until the muffler showed a crack. I had not noticed the vibration until I let my wife try driving a few miles on a four lane with nice wide shoulder. I have to get on the back first as she can just touch from the rider seat. I may need to check over the engine mounts.
        Thanks for the pointers

          Foot Peg Vibration

Where the muffler mounts on the alloy bracket (the shiny ones on yours) the hole that the bolt passes through should be rubber bushed. Is the rubber bush on yours missing or do you have a big flat washer jammed up against the bracket that is allowing exhaust vibrations to be transmitted to the bracket/foot peg?

muffler mounts both have good rubber. left side vibrated out after reassembly and was replaced with bolt and lock nut. I will check to see that they are tight but not solid.
            Thanks
