I got the mongrel running pretty well overall, I want to replace the needles and seats when i first spend the $ on a tire...

but im getting some rough idling, - it seems to jsut take off all the way to about 5K, then it jsut stutters ....

I also am getting some low level back rumbling and popping out the exhaust when were decellerating...

Oh and i do get some back popping out the carbs occasionally too.. the valves seem to be ok, and timing is on..
I do know ill have to rebalance carbs..

I put on indi filters, have 4/2 exhaust believe its stock sf jets..

    Any ideas guys?

I do got to say, when it hits about 2750 it just takes off, even impressed the guy alongside me on the highway...

Hey Jeff, make sure the lip in side the filters isnt blocking the passages that are on the end of your carbs! They might hafta come back just a tad. HTH...........................MITCH

I Had the exact thing happen to mine. 5000K was max before it sputtered and at take off it cutout unless I gave plenty of throttle.
Same setup as you. Indy filters and 4 in 2 exhaust. I dealt with it for a month or so and just last week I pulled the indy filters and put the airbox back on. Reset the carbs and it was light SHAZAMM!

I know I did not rejet when I made the changes to indy filters and 4 in 2 exhaust so I figured that might be it. But theres is a good chance the indy filters were partially blocking some of the air jets in the front of the carbs.

Did you rejet your carbs when you made the changes?

I would try running it without filters for a short distance and see what you get.

This will at least tell you if the rubber boots on the indy filters are blocking any air jets.

        Good luck,

          Individual Air Filters

Jeff, I had the same problem when I attempted to use individual air filters. The rubber collar on the filters where they attach to the carb air horns was too big. It blocked off the air balancing ports right at the mouth of the carbs plus acted as a partial choke at higher RPM making the mixture go away too rich. Try pulling the filters off and go for a quick run and see how it performs.

I'll try it, i went to the indy's and like most of the rest of it, but maybe i am blocking..

I was using the stock airbox, (the filter was long destroyed), and it was ok.. but for themost part I did like this better.. Maybe that lip is blocking the air a bit though..

MMM looks like i gotta check it out again..

I haven't changed any of the jets yet, so were still on the norm there..
