  • brake upgrade

With Roxy running again, its time to begin my next project to screw her up once more. Id like to replace my brake calipers with newer calipers. The old ones have seen their share of miles and are ready for retirement. Is there a good set of front and rear calipers that are a direct drop in replacement? If not, what would I have to make or modify to make a good set fit?

If your XS11 is a standard, it's fairly easy. There are kits available to adapt Brembo calipers. Pandemonium has a kit that I believe goes to the 65 mm caliper.

Motolanna has a kit for the 40 mm caliper. If you look, I think you'll find they have both sides. The bike fitment you're looking for is XS650 with 35 mm forks.

I'll you're doing this, you'll want lighter rotors. XJ4ever.com is a good source. Or 650Central.com will hook you up.

I upgraded my front calipers to R6 blue spots, with 320mm rotorss. Stops quick!

I wouldn't upgrade the rear brakes (if there is even a way to) as there is no problem locking up the rear wheel the way it is now. Something you sure don't want in a panic stop. JMHO.

The rear could benefit from a lighter weight rotor. I agree, the brake has plenty of stop as is.

My caliper is in sad shape in the rear. Ive rebuilt it, but it never moves smoothly and sticks from time to time. Id like to replace it, but I couldnt find a decent new replacement. I figured my best shot was an upgrade to a modern caliper.

I think maybe the ‘78-‘80 XS650 Special might have the same caliper. Compare part numbers. All I have for you is that if your caliper is roached, buy another and rebuild it. Something else will require re-engineering on your part.

The right front caliper will fit the rear, you could use that if you end up upgrading the front. If you rebuild any of them, get a new SS piston and a seal kit.
