  • oil change

I have a fuel leak, think it has to do with floats, because both petcocks have been rebuilt. I am worried about gas in oil. First time to change oil here, what is the prefered oil? Also where is a good place to get a new oil filter? I am going to pull the carbs and fix the leak as soon as I get the time. Also I have a 1979 XS1100 Special I am parting out let me know if you guys need anything. Thanks.

    preferred oil

    Hey kdm226,
I guess you've figured it out that the fuel leakage problem is commom to the xs line. It's not something we can't overcome though. Ii have found that 20-50 Castrol works the best in my machine (80 Midnight Spec.). I have been successful in locating filters locally, in Maine, by checking out the auto parts chain stores (VIP Auto and Auto Zone), I was also able to pick up three from my local Walmart. They were all Fram filters with o-rings. After that, there are several outlets on line that offer replacement oil filters for our bikes. Just do a search for "oil filter xs1100" and you should get a pretty good list of sites. Hope this helps.

    Enjoy your machine,

      oil filters

some guys sell packs of 3 or 5 on ebay for reasonable prices, but the walmarts or autozones or discount auto parts sell the Fram filter with O-ring needed for around $3. Model is something like 6004 or 4006. You'll recognize it...

You need to test the petcocks because they may not be sealing right with the rebuild kit.

I might be interested in the speedometer, if it looks and works good. Mine jumps all over the place between 50 and 70 mph. I am hoping that the new cable (waiting at my local Yamaha dealer) will fix the problem but I have some doubts.

I am interested in the controls mounted on the left handlebar(hi/low, horn, etc...). Also the choke lever on the left side of the carbs.

              Thanks,
