  • Carb soak & rubber

I'm using Hydro Seal II to soak carb parts. Will this stuff wreck rubber seals such as o-rings or, say, that little rubber tip on the float needle? The label says "not for use on rubber". Thanks much!

I've never heard of Hydro Seal II, but if I were you, my biggest consideration would be saving the Butterfly Shaft Seals if you weren't thinking to replace them.

Hi. By 'save' do you mean 'remove before I soak the carb itself so they don't get soaked'?
Someone suggested I dilute down about 1/3 with gas to go easy on the rubber.

        Hi Mark,
I think you answered your own question. I have been using Original Pine-Sol for years to soak full banks of carbs with no damage to the rubber parts.

Here's the SDS on the Hydro Seal II:

        https://solvewithb.com/sds/HS3_EN.pdf

I do not think it would be wise to mix gasoline with Hydro Seal II !!!

        1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)

        1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
        1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

          Hydro Seal II

The properties of that cleaner look like they might be too harsh for the carbs.

I meant use a cleaner that doesn't hurt the rubber parts if you want to keep those rubber parts.

If you had removed the BSS, you would surely replace them.

I use Berryman's carb cleaner when I am removing all the rubber parts to replace them.

I use diluted Pinesol (original forumla) when I want to clean carbs and preserve rubber parts.

Don't put rubber/plastic parts in carburetor cleaner. If the butterfly shaft seals have never been replaced, now is the time to do it. Dismantle the carburetors and clean them properly. Reassemble with new seals. They are available OEM and aftermarket.

Thanks for the suggestion to replace those seals. I sure don't want to take them apart that far and all that and I know I know if I don't do it now I will take it all apart 3 more times before I realize that I should have done a fantastic job the first time.... like those guys on XJBikes.com keep saying. I think I've read almost 100 printed pages on carb rebuilding.
                I'll do it.
                Thanks for the exhortation.
The jets and emulsion tubes are sure looking nice after a few days of soak.
