    I believe you're correct on the purpose of the plates, but I don't think that will be an issue for me. (Hopefully, anyway.) Thanks much for the info. I've got a set on the way. My current ones really aren't too bad, except the outer ridge that keeps your foot from slipping off the end is missing on the left side, and my bike is in really good shape, so from the safety and aesthetic views, I justified a new set. Looking forward to having them on, just started the thread so I would do the job right.

      FYI...in a pinch until you find the right stuff, 1" heater automotive heater hose can be slipped on there temporarily. JAT.

      I used that on mine for quite a while.
