  • Rear Caliper removal

I just want to change the pads. Do I HAVE to remove the rear wheel?

Looking at the service manual, its buried behind wheel removal. Can't find anything difinitive on the forum.

      Rear Brake Pads

No, you do not have to remove rear wheel. If you have rear luggage, you may find it to your advantage to remove right rear bag for easy access to pads.

        Hi Mike,
if I recall correctly you do have to remove the axle to be able to lift the caliper off the disc. The wheel should sit there on it's splines.

Looking at the manual perhaps not necessary to touch the axle.
once the caliper bolt is removed from the caliper frame it should lift off.
reminded of the pad retaining screw with the thread removed.

No axle removal needed. I found in later years, it has been easier to just remove the right side hard case of my Venturer. Some 35yrs. earlier, for some reason could change the rear brake pads without sidecase removal. Must just be old age and treachery catching up.

              thanks all

Got it done. The pad retainer screw was a bit tough but some liquid wrench and an impact driver got it loose.

              Old pads had about 1.5mm

New pads are Ferodo organic. Lubed up the caliper contact spots with brake grease. Anti seize on bolt and screw threads.

Pretty straightforward (thanks to Phil who schooled me in brakes a week earlier with my car), and things seemed in good condition, amazing machine.

All is well agin, had a great ride afterwards.
