Give you a brake, not a Kit Kat break!

      Hey Ben,

Well, since you're going to get the new MC from PNM, then you can get the front Special brake pads for them as well, they have the best prices:
Fits: Front Right Hand Side XS1100S (79-81) Special, XS1100L (1980)

      $14.00US /Set

      BRAKE PADS
Fits: Front Left Hand Side XS1100S (79-81) Special, XS1100L (1980)
      Rear XS1100L (1981).

Those rotors will fit and work just find on your machine, they are the same size, it's just that they are slotted instead of solid. And don't worry about the cracking, it's more of a problem if they get severely overheated, the stress of Xsive heating and cooling which can induce stress cracks!

Your new MC and pads should go a long way towards improving your braking response and feel, but I have to tell you, the SS brake lines is the "bomb". Did you see my post on the Members Forum, I added it to the "Birthday Boy" thread, put them on last weekend, and with my wimpee front MC designed for a single caliper system, I barely have to pull the handle now, and they are tighter than SWMBO on our wedding night!!

        hahahahah.......

        Tight brakes are good... and...

Yes, I know ss lines are the bomb. Just not sure I have the time and expertise to get some on my bike. As I mentioned, it would be an irresistable expenditure if an XSive was (still?) making them and they show up in the mail and you just bolt them on.

.. we have a section in the parts dept where i work with everything to build a steel braid brake line set up, i will get a parts guy and have a look. might be able to come up with something and a price, but they might be expensive here
..cost me about 100 bucks last year when i did the front lines on the Norton (only one front brake)

PnMore master cyl. is a nice quality unit. Front brakes are still spongy.

I just took the wheel off to swap on the new brake pads and vented rotors. (consequently I now have a good rotor to replace the rear as well)

I hope to be able to install tires this week. After it's all back together, I'll repost on the brakes.

I would really like braided or stainless steel lines. Looks like the front shouldn't be hard at all to do that with?

                  Just re-read thread

Did not see where calipers have been taken apart/cleaned etc.
Good chance there is corrosion there.
Would imagen you have flushed and replaced fluid. Dot 3/4 fluid absorbs water and should be replaced every year or so.

                    Spongy Brakes

Do not see where you have replaced the old rubber hydraulic hoses with stainless braided hoses. I know that I and many many others have solved our soft brake problems by doing this. Suggest you stop ignoring this advice and replace the old hoses.
You can purchase the hoses from any good well stocked Harley dealer. Just measure up your existing hoses for length and go visit HD
Also suggest that you do away with the junction located between the fork legs and run 2 hoses directly off the master directly to the calipers.

Not ignoring the lines. I want stainless lines but haven't found a local place to have them made.

SS brake lines all over the internet

                        Check this place out:

                        SS Brake lines for Yamaha

I just did a search on stainless steel motorcycle brake lines and this is the first interesting site I came to.

I got mine from a local bike shop and selected them out of a catalog. Measured from the caliper to the MC, eliminated the stupid union under the Yamaha badge got a double banjo bolt, badda bing, badda boom...stoppies!

Yeah, you are gonna spend a little, I spent about $180, but not stopping in time will cost you more in hospital bills!

You will never get the oil out of the pads; ditch 'em.

1980 they went to the slotted discs stock on the SGs and I think they stuck with them.

                          Ben,

Untill you get your stainless lines or whatever your mods to your brakes are, in the meantime, take out some of the travel on your lever in the front brake lever, and the back rod (but I think you said your backs are good),

I had spongy rears, took out some of the travel with the rod going into the back master and it helped alot, of course I have the linked system on my xj.

Just got home from testing out my front brakes. Stayed in shop and pulled the right side caliper off, took piston out and cleaned it and cleaned caliper. Had more sludge than left side and about the same amount of corrosion.

Ran up and down American Ave. . I thought it stopped ok before, but stops much better now.

When time allows will do the rear, even though it works good.

Thanks for the help, guys. I checked out both web sites.

I fired off a couple emails and we'll see what response I get. The spieglerusa site is very pricey but I like how they at least list XS1100 model bikes there. That gives the customer the idea that he is getting a specific application.

What's the deal with the brake line union? Does it decrease braking? The alternative is having 2 lines coming off of the master cylinder?

Could not find XS850 stuff as was mentioned... ??
