  • Replacing Rear Suspension

    Good Morning! Quick question regarding the rear suspension. The OEM shocks are on their way out and I want to replace them, but I also do not want to spend a ton of money (funds running a little low currently). I am looking at these https://www.ebay.com/itm/2PCS-360mm-...item2aa7fab938.

    I know they will fit as I have seen them on multiple XS's and the specs seem to match up. My question is will the 360's be to high? In additon to swapping out the OEM shocks I am hoping to add a bit more clearance in the back. Obviously once weighted they will sag down a bit and I am assuming the difference between the 360' and 320's will be okay.

    Any feedback or knowledge would be appreciated!

    Shocks that cheap are going to be junk. I don't think you should waste your money. Nothing is listed as far as spring rate, so it's generic junk. Decent shocks cost three times that and more. Some of the frugal on here use XJ1100 shocks. They may be rebuildable. They'll certainly be correct in length and with progressive springs. I promise the eBay shocks will only be good for holding the bike up.

      Weren't people using Harley shocks and bushing the holes?

        Also, that is almost 2" longer. I put some on one XS that was 1.2" longer and it was at the edge of safe. Any longer and the driveshaft is at a bad angle and it WILL take out the "U" joint.
        HD takeoff shocks from a bagger will have heavy springs, but even the sportster shocks will work. Bushings are easy to make out of metal tubes or automotive front end bushings.

          Cheap construction or not, I do not really have the budget for anything else currently but the OEM needs to be replaced in order to ride the bike... At any case, until I can get higher quality ones I will probably go with one of these "cheap" options. If I snag a size what would be the best way test and ensure it is not too big? If I put it in neutral and roll the bike, there should be some sort of clunking or binding noise indicating that the shaft angle is too harsh correct?

              The 320MM would be the correct length. You may not hear any noise if the U-joint angle is too sharp, it would just wear prematurely.

                320mm is stock correct? I am hoping to rasie the back without compromising the driveshaft. What is the largest size I can install while not wearing down the U joint?

                  12 5/8" (320MM) is stock, you can safely go to 13" with no problem.

                    Go to eBay, look at some pictures, you will find a pair...

                    Put them on my 80 SG and were fantastic in function and looked really good.

                      I did Showas on my SG as well and they’re working great. Plug and play.
