  • 78 XS1100E Vehicle Emission Control Information

    Hi Folks,
I'm trying to register an out of state XS1100E in CA (oh joy) and the DMV has their head in a dark place, again. This bike doesn't have the original emission control sticker on the inside of the left side cover. Lost it during a side cover repaint. In 1978 all bikes in the US had this sticker and they are bike specific. Two questions:

    1. Does anyone have one in good condition that you could send me a clear picture of?
    2. Aware of anyone making reproductions?

If I can get one onto my side cover, the DMV will sign off and allow me to reg the bike. Otherwise I either get to ride it unregistered or junk the bike (that was an actual suggestion by a DMV office sloth).

The bike is 100% stock so no funny business here, just trying to deal with the brain trust in State gov't who can't think past their regulations for a 40 year old bike. Appreciate any assistance as I'd like to get this dude on the road again.

    Glen

I contacted this seller to see if he can modify the decals he makes:

I'll check what I have next week, when I have time. I DO have a '78 CA bike, so I may have a copy of the sticker if it's still on the side cover.

That would be super Ray. I found a company that produces reproductions but they need a picture of one. Much appreciated!

              Antique

Here in PA if you register a bike or any vehicle over 25 years old as an "antique", The state inspections and emission inspections are no longer required. You might want to check if that would work in CA.

                Glen,
Go to another office and start again. You should NOT need to prove the CA cert on a bike that old. I hope you have the name of the "person" that hindered you, as you CAN make a complaint about the bias against motorcycles to the state. The first three of the vin, 2H7, denotes a North American built motorcycle. I will still try and fine what I have, but you should NOT need it in this state!
There has NEVER been a motorcycle smog inspection in California, and for a bike from the late '70's, there is no way for them to need ANY smog info. There are some DMV offices that people do NOT use for a reason. I think you found one of those. If you complain it may help to shut down the idiot that is running the office, or at least allowing morons to try a do a third grade job.

Well, the one sidecover I had has overspray on the tag. I tried to GENTLY clean it WITHOUT using chemicals, but it still took out the printing.
As I stated earlier, you should NOT need that to register in CA. The bike is over 40 years old, and has NEVER had smog inspections in this state.

Update: I finally prevailed over the CA DMV. I was able to purchase a replica (except for Yamaha logo due to TM laws) decal from VinLabelShop.com. A real professional job. While they were at it, they produced a label for my 80 MS that is getting repainted now and thus needing a new label.

I also contacted Yamaha and their Gov't Relations people were nice enough to write a letter stating my 78 1100E met all Fed standards, yada yada. Very nice of them. So I have both items and the DMV can no longer refuse to issue a registration or tell me to junk my bike. Geez

If any of you have similar issues, god forbid, contact me and I'll provide more details.
