  • New bike. 79 xs1100 special (SF?)

Just got this 79 XS1100 home yesterday. No spark but new Accell super coils in box with receipt $215.00 15500 miles. No real damage other than age and some not so creative wiring repairs. Missing kick start lever. 4 year old tires. Pulled windshield and rear rack/rest off to sell off. $550 with a clean title. How did I do? Will share pic when I get home from work.

Well, we do like pictures. You might want to save the plastic-ware in case you change your mind. The shifter is usually clamped horizontally forward of the foot pegs (I think, and in case you didn't know).

And the kickstart lever is NOT installed on the engine, but tucked into the frame for emergency use.
If the battery is not fully charged, you will NOT get a spark. You will also need to check the pickup coil wires, under the left crank cover. Check the repair and the mods in the forums for more info, or just do a search on "pickup coil".

Where is the kicker tucked away? Battery tested out at 12.8V and good CCA's, but no juice anywhere past fuses. Looks like someone did wiring mods when they should have left it to a competent hand. Lots of hardware store quality crimp connectors. Puke! All getting redone right tomorrow time permitting. Is the 79SF wiring anything different from the 78-79 standards? I found a diagram in color for them.

          Hey Steve,

There are some differences in the wiring, partly because of the different types of lights and gauges used. Here's a link to some links for wiring diagrams:
          http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44261

Now, you'll need to check those Accel coils to see if they are 1.5 ohm or 3.0 ohm type. If 3.0 ohm type, you'll need to remove and bypass the ballast resistor so they will get their full 12 volts, and the TCI will still see just 3 ohms resistance.

The 79SF uses 1 gauge turn indicator bulb vs. separate L/R with Standard, all turn signals are just signals, the standard uses running lights up front along with turns. The special uses low fuel idiot light, standard a full gauge indicator. Things like those little differences. There is an error in the Clymer's diagram regarding the pickup coil wires and the neutral light.

You need a site that can host the image link 24/7. Your computer will not work. This site is running on OLD software, just like the OLD tech of our bikes. I'm still working on my own site so I can once again post photos.

Aside from the mentioned wiring mods, I suggest checking contacts for corrosion inside the stop/run switch. That switch COMPLETES the running circuit.

Have you considered Backblaze B2? The price is hard to beat. If you only used it for photo hosting on this site, it would probably never cost anything. You get 10GB free storage and 1GB free downloads per day. If you want any help setting it up, I'll do what I can to help you.
