I just lost the core of my header megaphone on a trip (see Ride Reports for that story). It is a one piece 4 into 1, swept to the right side. This is a 70's header set up and I can't remember the manufactuer. Not that it matters much cause I doubt I will find a new core for it. I am thinking of cutting off the megaphone and adapting a cannister type of muffler to it. Something with good flow, but perhaps a little quieter than it used to be. Does anyone have any idea what might work, along with a thrifty source? Anybody else running this type of muffler?

Get a thin walled pipe, drill LOTSA holes in it, weld two metal discs at the ends, don't forget to make a hole in each one the size of the pipe, make em the right size to make em fit into your megaphone thingie. Wrap some stone or glass wool around it (steel spunges work too, last a bit longer but a bit louder).
Put it in, make the end cap out of aluminium, fix it in with some screws and you're off....
It worked for me.
Send me your e-mail if you want pictures of my 4 in 2 thingies. Guts and all....

the fix
Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I finally ran up to Dennis Kirks on Sunday and picked up a Kerker baffle insert and end cap. It is not the right fit exactly, but it works. The end cap is much smaller than the original and is ends up recessed into the megaphone about 8 inches or so. Still, it works OK and has returned the sound levels back to about the original level before the guts bailed out. After installing the new baffle set up, I did a triple cross with mechanics wire across the rear exit so I don't lose the new one. Incidentally, I lost the nuts on my left front motor mounts during that trip as well. Not discovered until I got home. That was a good reminder to check things over more often, especially when touring.......Miles to Go, Fuel to Burn
