  • Correct 1980 XS1100LG rear axle/caliper set up

    Hi folks,

I have a question about the correct order of parts when re-assembling the rear caliper / axle on an 1100LG. A couple of months ago I picked up an 80 1100LG with very low miles, but with brake issues. I wondering if I'm missing a spacer on the rear axle. Evidence is that the rear rotor was digging into the caliper frame and it had been overheated from constant rubbing of the pads on rotor. Clearly alignment wasn't set up correctly by the last owner. I have a stock / restored 78 1100E, but the part set up is a little different so that isn't of much help. I have the 3H3-25377-00-00 COLLAR, WHEEL that fits against the seal in the wheel casting. Before disassembly the caliper frame sat to its right followed by the hose and caliper bracket, followed by a gap and then the swing arm. See pic link below.

I've re-ground the rear rotor and have rebuilt the rear caliper for correct operation, but now need to reassemble it. At this point I'd rather not guess what Yamaha designed in the 80s. The exploded parts drawing I have doesn't provide much detail other than a list of parts with fuzzy sketches. I can just put it back together and make sure things line up for free rotation, but I'd prefer to have a roadmap.

Will someone please share a close up pic of their 1100 special / midnight special caliper and axle set up on the right side, taken from the rear?

    Thanks!

Here is a diagram for the LG (is that what you have?)

Make sure the "tension bar" (I call it the torsion bracket) is parallel to the front/rear of the bike. It is a little tricky to get installed correctly.

Part #36, it fits the Special models ONLY! If you have a Standard part, you will rub! I don't remember the exact difference, but it's about 5mm.

Hi Sid, yes that is the diagram I have and it appears to represent the parts I have, at least in quantity. I just can't tell if I have the correct parts since the detail of the drawing is lacking. It's a little bothersome that there is a gap where you can see the axle as the axle nut appeared to be tight (see pic). Thus my original concern plus the rotor/caliper rubbing. In the pic you can see where the Tension Bar is, to the right of the caliper frame. That is repeated on my 78 XS11, but as noted that bike has a different spacer setup.

Hi Diver Ray, the Cover, Hub Dust inside the wheel looks original. Given the low miles and the lack of detailed attention to the caliper, I doubt it was changed. The one in my MS is sitting below the edge of the wheel hub a bit and is the surface against which the Collar, Wheel sits.

Appreciate the feedback guys. I suppose I'll carefully reassembly everything and make sure all is parallel and running free. When I rebuilt the rearend on the 78, it all fell in line perfectly with like-new brake operation and freely rotating wheel/rotor. Is mystery!

In your picture, everything looks correct. That gap is normal to the left of the swing arm pinch joint and your caliper mount bracket looks centered on the rotor.

              Hi XSSIVEUS,
The manual has a sequence for installing/tightening the nuts when you put the wheel and caliper back together. If I recall correctly the pinch bolt is the last thing to be tightened otherwise you induce bend into the swing arm

I'm only about 3 hours away. Let me know if you can't figure something out.
