    79' SPECIAL

After a long time of waiting and procrastinating, I had finally put the new valve cover gasket on after checking if my Cam chain had slipped off the sprocket, been out of time, or bent valves. Everything checked out okay (some valve clearances were a little off but i plan on fixing all of that later). Before, (after cleaning my carbs thoroughly, and setting my float heights to stock) my bike would run, but die when given gas. Sometimes it would run at a high idle at start up, and as it got warmer i would have to keep dropping the idle set screw to keep it from idling too high.

After that, I opened up the carbs yet again, replaced the float valve assemblies (from Yamaha dealer even though they turned out to be not genuine Mikuni parts, giving me a lower float level/higher turned right side up)(I know everyone says they wont run right with these but there is no change from before), checked my coil voltage output, checked my vacuum advance wires/lines, and every ground/electrical connection on the bike. Replaced the exhaust with an identical set, without any holes/cracks.

My battery is dead, so I kick start it to get her going. Runs, smooth idle, but same issues. At first, it bogged with throttle, but when warmed up and after turning the idle screw in (higher RPMS), things change. When I give it gas, it stays in the higher RPMS for a few seconds, then drops, instead of returning to lower RPMS right away. Ride-able, but things aren't right at all. Also, smokes a decent bit out of the left exhaust muffler in and out, barely any out of the right side.

First things I am going to try - New battery (what kind? models? Specs?) Readjusting float heights to spec ( I assume its getting too much fuel, due to long lasting rev)- Balancing carbs and adjusting mix screws

Keep in mind, all of this happened after that huge rain storm I rode home in (with pod filters on/stock airbox has been put on ever since). Was hoping these new valve assemblies would fix everything, but NOPE.

Your big thing is the carb balance/adjustments. Out of sync or vacuum leak are the two primary causes for high idle with these bikes. If you still have the original plugs on the carb boots, replace them!! A dead/dying battery will also cause a LOT of headaches! You are not getting what little spark you need to run properly, especially below 2K RPM's.
    So, in order:
    1. Battery
    2. Sync and idle screw mixture on carbs
    3. Vacuum leaks?

Forgot to mention, plugs were also replaced and gap'ed to spec.
Where else should I look for vacuum leaks?

Easy way is get it to idle, and then spray a LITTLE carb cleaner through the straw around all the carb boots, then the vacuum plugs/caps on the boots, and finally the carb bodies, around the throttle shaft. When the engine speed increases, you have the leak.

got a (etx18L) deka battery from my local family farm and home. 340cca, 12V. Was the same one that was in my bike before. Charging it up right now and we will see how she runs

              Hey Civil,

You mentioned changing from Pods to OEM Airbox, what YEAR was the airbox from. The early boxes have openings in the small ports that the upper carb vent lines connect to for proper venting. But the later airboxes for the 81+ do NOT have openings in the nipple ports, and so with the older carbs, the vent tubes are not GETTING vented, which can cause flooding and other fun problems with the carbs. Just another thing to check.
