I have read in a few posts that these bikes need exhaust gaskets. Is that true? When removing my own 79 special exhaust, another 79 special's exhaust, and my 80 special exhaust, NONE of them had any special gasket on them. Is this right or wrong? Asking mainly for my 70SF.

There are crush gaskets between the pipe and head. I believe the 81’s had a ceramic ring type gasket(s) at the crossover.Skids (Sid Hansen)

The gaskets usually remain in the head, have not seen them come out with the pipes. They turn the same color as the head and at first glance don't look like gaskets, but believe me, they are there.
I removed mine by getting under them with a thin screwdriver and working them out, then cleaning up the "bore" with some emery cloth before installing the new ones.Jerry Fields
