  • Exhausting question

So, I have this set of Jardine 4-2 Spaghetti pipes I'm selling but I'm asked a question for which I'm not sure of an answer. My thought is as to fitment, exhausts that fit on one XS will fit on any other model XS including Standard, Special, and Midnight Special. I know some models change the stud type for mounting to the engine but outside of this, I'm not sure. Is this is a correct assumption? The only other issue I can recall with exhausts which I'm aware of for the Mac 4-1 is access to the oil filter can be an issue. I don't think Jardine's have the same issue. Hoping someone has more knowledge on this.

So is there a fitting issue between models? Seem the frames and engine are essentially the same when it comes to exhaust systems.

The only differences might be in the hangers which is pretty easily overcome.

      Jardine instructions

      will this help?
It shows a couple of differences for mounting to the special and standard.
But can be installed on either one.
If the picture is blurry on here, I can email it to you if you want.

(I probably should scan this as a PDF file someday, not sure if that would be any better or not)

I thought that it may only be the hanger that's the issue. I've moved Mac and Jardine between standards before and I think I've seen them moved between specials. Most of the issue ever run into is changing the filter because of the oil cooler plate with some header styles. Not even sure that would be an issue with this type of header.

Thanks for the diagram. It would be nice to have the original. This one gets blurry on the writing when opened up. I can zoom it in a bit though and make it out.

One thing odd is it mentions a short and long spacer. One for the "Special" and the other for the "Stocker" So is there a different insert then? I don't recall ever seeing an insert on an exhaust before.

Sorry, I no longer have the exhaust to take a look at, all I have is that paper instruction sheet. Wish I could remember more about the details to try and help you out. Hopefully someone else will be able to answer your questions about the spacers.

The bike that exhaust came off of (80G), has the short exhaust studs so no need for the spacers. All XS11 except the 78-79 Standard have the short exhaust studs. The spacers would be needed on the 78-79 Standards only. No issues with oil filter since it is a 4-2 type exhaust. Only thing may be an issue for some bikes (not sure which) would be the crossover tube interfering with the center stand.

The Jardines don't have a cross over tube. The instructions are showing removal of the "stock" system before the installation of the Jardine. And, if you remove the long studs and install shorter ones, you don't need the long spacers for the Standards.
They DO work with the center stand still on, on both models.

These Jardines do have a crossover pipe back by the mufflers.

Phil knows this set because he's seen them. Thanks for chiming in Phil.

Before this guy with the MNS decides to buy, I want him to be happy it will fit.

Looking at the photo, isn't there some kind of spacer already attached to the flange(s)?

The Jardine I had was the 2 into 1 megaphone 14-2501-01 as described in the instructions that I posted. I believe the number was stamped on the rear hanger bracket. It did have the crossover pipe which i think is shown on page 2 of the instructions which I have around here somewhere.

I had it mounted on one of my MNS's. It Looked great but I wanted a black exhaust. no oil filter issues, and the center stand did work with it, But sorry, i can't remember if it had any sort of header spacer or not.

I probably have pictures of it mounted on the MNS.
If that would help you out Let me know and I'll post them.

I installed a set on my XJ; think they originally came off a Special but don't remember now. No problems with the engine fitment BUT the rear muffler hanger point is different on different XS models so if you are using stock Jardine silencers you may have to modify the hanger system. I just used some flat stock to reach between the muffler tab and the XJ's frame tab, no big deal. Muffler tab was behind (closer to rear wheel) the frame tab. Alternative, in my case, would be to shorten the Jardine header pipes and thus move the mufflers forward.

Jardine headers use a larger diameter pipe than the stock XJ mufflers so choice would be to use the Jardine mufflers (which I did) or to expand the XS pipes to fit the Jardine collectors.

Either way, the mufflers are going to be more of a problem than mounting the headers unless you have the XS11 the mufflers were designed to fit.
