  • Rear Shoch suggestion

Seeking recommendations for a new OEM looking rear shock for my 78E to purchase. I don't want to rebuild an old shock.

My local bike shop (works on old bikes) suggested a Progressive for my basic touring riding, not a racer, but the chrome ones are back ordered. I saw Hagons online for $378 USD.

I did a bit of searching on here but my search skills may be lacking

    Hey Brian ,

Hope to see you somewhere this year. Those shiny things on my E are Progressive HD. They work ok BUT don't really match up with the Traxxion Dynamics emulators I have in the front forks. But I likely run much stiffer setup than most. While the rear setup could be better (different shocks) my Progressive HDs do work ok riding in the mountains on technical roads. But riding at the XS North rallies in Canada I do really get beat to death on a lot of your Canadian roads. I'd like to try a nice set of straight rate shocks in the back. I think I'd be happier.

Hagons should be a better choice for the money.

Does anyone know for sure of the original 78E had a black or chrome body to the shocK ?

I don't think my shocKs are original with chrome body and lower shrouds.
Some origanal ads appear to be black body shocKs

Chrome shrouds and springs ARE original for......81 Venturer. Also the KYB original shocks had one additional spring pre-load setting AND one additional position dampening clicker...A-N-D also had a slightly larger diameter chrome spring. All three differences were ONLY applied to the Venturer as it came from factory. Also, ONLY applied to Venturer FROM factory, front fork springs were progressive along with the added Schrader valves for air pressure control and varience.

Thanks for the Venturer info. You didn't mention the body - black or polished SS / chrome looking?

Check out IKON shocks if you have the budget. They used to Koni but were bought out and now reproduced. The KONI, IKON is no mistake. They are a bit precious for sure but a great shock.

What are the shocks supposed to have for the rubber in the ends of the eyes? The service manual didn't note anyting.

My newly arrived shocks are difrerent on the bottom. One has a metal bushing inside the rubber, one does not.

Tops are the same with rubber only.

The old shocks are not original and I hvae not yet removed them.

The one with the metal bushing goes on the RIGHT side, the other goes on the LEFT, or drive side. Tops didn't have bushings on OEM in '78.

I was a bit worried, but looks like Mr. Hagon knows what he is doing
