  • Engine running rich

Ok so I fixed the cylinder 1 problem for now, but it looks to me like it wont be long before it happens again. My engine is running real rich and Im not sure how to fix it. I tried adjusting the float levels with no results. On cyl 1 its lower than im really comfortable with and still running rich.
The carbs are very clean and were rebuilt last year around this time with new seals and diaphragms. The jets are stock. The float needles arent sticking and they do seal properly. Ideas?

P.s. these are my plugs. One on the right is the old one. One on the left only has 10 miles on it.

Is it all the plugs going like that? Just curious, maybe start with the basics like are you getting enough air. Are you running an airbox or pod filters? I ran into an issue with a plugged air filter causing issues. If you're running the airbox, maybe try removing the filter and see if there's an air restriction causing it to be too rich.

This will be the easier check.

Harder check. Did you check if the diaphragms on the carbs are set to center as well?

Just a couple of things to check on.

Did you by any chance use K&L pilot jets?

Their pilot jets in their kits are wrong for our bikes.

      It would cause your problem.

BTW, Changing the float level is a band-aid to hide another problem. I would put the fuel bowls where they are supposed to be and fix the real problem.

No k&l jets. The jets are the stock original jets afaik. I set the float level back to where it should be when it didnt fix my problem. I am using the airbox. Ill try without the filter tomorrow and see if that helps. The diaphragms are all new and installed properly.

Also, the plugs for 1 and 4 are black. 2 and 3 are dark but not as bad as 1 and 4.

OK, there is a clue!! 1&4 are one coil, 2&3 is the other coil. It may be time to replace the old coils. BUT FIRST:
          1. Did you do an RPM drop adjustment for the idle mixture?
          2. Did you sync the carbs after the mixture adjustment?
I'm not sure if anyone has walked you through the CORRECT way to sync these bikes. This link: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=75 is good for a sync AFTER the first COMPLETE tune. This link: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13124 is a good one for setting up from scratch. If you are having problems or don't know how well it was last done, start here.

I did the propane test for my idle mixture.
As for sync, Eastcoaster walked me through how to sync my carbs when I first got the bike.

Ill look into new coils then. Ive looked through a few threads and i see the dyna coils are generally the way to go, minus the mikesXS coils. Which dynacoils should I be looking at? Ive seen both the dc1-1 and the dc2-1 recommended. Whats the difference?

I do NOT use propane for the mixture, but that's me. The "gas" we have out here is so bad, if you don't adjust for just the gas you will never get the bike to run properly.
For coils, I would go for the 3 Ohm coils and bypass the ballast resistor. That's what I've done on three bikes now, and it works. Just be SURE when you bypass the resistor the wires are wrapped in tape so they won't short to the tank or frame. It can leave you stranded!DAMHIKIJK.
You can also use Honda VFR coils if you have someplace close to pick them up. They are 3 Ohm and bolt up to the stock mounts. The wires are replaceable, 7mm solid core. You could then use a modern plug, and caps with no resistors.

Your last statement Ray is what I did to my Venturer....Honda VFR1100 coils. Mount in identical mount holes as original. Also unsoldered plug-in wires from original coils and re-soldered then on the VFR coils....new solid core 7mm plug wires.....has worked and bike runs like a charm(and like it did when I bought it new back in '81). Just have to have an ohm meter with you to check make sure they are 3ohm. Look alike coils supplied to some Hondas look to maybe be 3ohm but are actually 1.5ohm, and neither option is marked as such. Tis the reason to have an ohm meter with you to check across both poles of each coil to verify.

3 ohm dynas are in the mail along with a new airfilter. Running no filter helped a little, but with the spring pollen, i didn't want to run long so I didnt get a good reading. Old filter was pretty dirty though so I figured a new one wouldnt hurt.

Alright, new filters and new coils in. When I went to go pick up my filter, I decided to pick up a new set of plugs as well (why not, right?). Since then, Roxy's been running like a Swiss watch. No stutters, no stalls, and no odd noises. I haven't checked the plugs yet, but she hasn't fouled, so I'm guessing it can't be that bad. I drove her 40 miles today and had absolutely no issues. Here's hoping she stays this way until XSNE!
