80 special fork seals

Need to replace a leaky seal. Found the tutorial, anything "special" about a special? As far as seals go, any recommended places to get them? Do they still make OEM? Thanks!

Try to get the OEM seals. CLEAN everything! Check your fork tubes and make sure there are no pits, as that will eat the seals in days. There should be a "wiper" that goes over the top of the lower tube. Replace that at the same time if you can, as it will keep the seal working longer.
Other than that, it's pretty strait forward.

I ordered fork seals from PartShark a few months ago. They ended up being on back order and holding up the rest of my order, so I had them remove that part from the order. I think they were supposed to be back in stock by now though. I ended up finding them locally so haven't tried ordering from there again.

If you go for aftermarket, the seals in my 80SG were marked: 37 48 11

Thanks for all the great info. I ended up getting them from Parts Giant - on back order until next week.

Not really a big deal though as the weather in SD has not been cooperating with MC riding.

In reading through the tutorial, I see "Yamabond" mentioned - I think to seal around the seal (does that make sense?) Is this a commercially available product I can get locally? I haven't used it before.

Yamabond is a non hardening sealer. I think Permatex has one that is close, as does your Honda dealer. It is used in a this file to seal the cased when the engine is built or re-built. I think if you do a search the good alternative products will pop up.

Many of us use Yamabond 4.

It's a silicone product useful for gasket surfaces, etc.

I don't see the need to use it on fork seals unless the mating surface is badly scratched. The perimeter of the seals are made of rubber and they fit quite snugly.

Honestly, it's hard enough to get the seals out without glue!
