I have been working on a 1979 xs1100 special project for the last few weeks. I followed the clymer manuals instructions on the cam timing, but somehow bent an intake vlave on # 4 cylinder. It looks like to me that when you line up the dots on the cams with the arrows on the center cam holddown, that intake valve is depressed and is pushed into the piston. What am I doing wrong on this? it seems that the crank should be backed off a little bit so the piston is not entirely on tdc when the camshaft is tightened down. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Start with the crankshaft at #1 TDC then install the cams as close to lining up with the marks as possible.
#1 & #4 pistons should be TDC and those are the valves you need to keep closed during installation.Greg
