  • shimmy..

Hey I've gotten a chance to get the mongrel out to stretch its legs a bit..
(finally over 31 mpg woo hoo) and that's city driving..

I noticed the other day when i loosened my grip and went into a decelleration at about 45 mpg to about 35... the front wheel shimmys.. it goes away at about 35.. its not every time but most of the time...

checked tire pressures.. and all.. time to check the triple tree?
    or other options..

well a bit slowly... single parent of 3, and my oldest is a teen girl., cheerleader etc... (Need i whine more?)

I found a set of special forks on ebay for 13 bucks (the pair) to replace the rusted ones from rusty, and im going to be going end to end -

the engine is getting it's exercise in the mongrel to keep it going well..

I hear you... My daughter is 13, going on 30. She likes to make sure my hair is brushed and I'm dressed nice before I go out at night.

Oh.. and she plays guitar and sings in a band. Which I love since I'm also in a band, but everytime they play a show I want to run around poking eyes out. <Grumble>

My baby is turning 26 now... looking good...
Well, you know.... a head-turner... every time we go out she complains about needing new shoes and maybe a nice dress and some bags or something....
So when I'm not around I keep her locked up... Just in case.

Early on, in the "one thing after another" period, I developed a shimmy at 37-38 mph that went away when I put on new brake pads (probably also changed the fluid). Never figured that one out, but there it is. Maybe I fixed something else unknowingly, just cleaning and assembling.

                        Hi,
You refer to your bike as ''Rusty''. You might well want to look into the bearings in the steering head. For a quick check put the bike on the main stand, sit on the bike to get the weight off the front wheel and see how freely the front end moves. Everything should move freely.
I have a basement full of projects, my old XS1100 in the mix. We had some daycare issues to attend to, taking pretty much any slipping off to the basement out of the question. Now it's getting to be hay time (wifes horses you know).

                        Good luck,
                        Bob

May be the tire out of balance. Decelerating would put more weight on the front end which may be why it is noticeable then.

You know, i might have a bit of a brake drag on the front end..

im going to change out the pads and fluid, and spooge hole ...

I noticed a few times the front brake seemed to be a bit tight... so it makes sense when i decellerate that one side might be just grabbin a little?

Any input guys? Also gonna check the head..

                              Jeff,

I had some brake drag on the front, but it wasn't the spooge hole. It turned out to be the pistons in the brake calipers were rusty and sticking. I was able to save them by cleaning with 600 wet sanding, polishing and new seals.
