  • timing plate wobbling (cannot win with this thing)...

Ok, so I tried swapping the pickup coils from my 79 (as stated in my other thread...the wiring is in better shape). Those are completely shot...I got it started for a quick second, then the minute I gave it throttle, it died and wouldn't start again. Went back, and put my old coils (with the functional, yet disgusting looking wiring) back on, and it runs fine, except for one thing:

timing plate is wobbling?! I LITERALLY put it back on the way I took it off, WITH CARE. What am I missing?!

    A FRUSTRATED ERIC

Forgot a BIG thing: the advance is moving with idle. I know that's a problem, but not sure WHICH problem. all I did was take the friggin' timing plate / coils off. AAAHHHHHH....

    Also...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!!! I'm 700 miles away from my family, so I figured I'd work on the bike for a while!

Make sure that the notch is properly aligned with the groove.

My guess would be that at some time or other the motor got laid on the ignition side with cover removed and timing plate got a little bent. If so, figure not an issue, considering mine has been that way for a few decades now.

If the plate is installed properly, but bent, straighten it with pliers/hammer. Or buy one on eBay.
