Tail light on when parked 81 xs 1100

Went for a ride today to the local harbor freight and locked the forks when I went in. When I came out I noticed the tail light was on. The bike started fine so I went home (30 miles) and parked it in the garage. Evidently somehow if you don't lock the steering a certain way the tail light will come on???

If you go all the way counter clockwise, you engage the "parking lights". From off, just go about 15 degrees to the first "click".

With mine I have to go all the way and then back one click.
