  • 82 XJ1100 Gas Gage Test

Does anyone know how to test the fuel gage on an XJ1100 (four bars)? Mine doesn't register anything and I'd thought I'd fix it now while I have the tank off. Thanks

    you already tested

If it don't work you've tested already...lol.Mine didnt work cause of rust on the windings,(lightly scrubed clean, sometime works sometime don't) I've also heard the float falls off the arm.Either way make sure plug conettion is clean also.I'm not sure of exact fix as mine only works sometime ,sorry

      Hey there Pshaw,

Well, the XJ wiring diagram only describes it as a Fuel Sender, showing the 2 wires that go to it, both going back to the display computer terminals. Most of these things are potentiometers, allowing more or less current to flow thru them as the float mechanism changes in position. So, take your multimeter, ohms to check for continuity, and move the float around to see if the reading change, looking for areas of corrosion with contacts that could be cleaned up.

Some folks seemed surprised that most of these designs have actual current running thru the hardware inside the tank in the gas!! Also check your plug to see if current is being sent to the float assembly. HTH. T.C.
