  • Fairings

I took a good ride today down the highway and at about 75 the wind was beating me to death.
I have gotten used to a full fairing on my BMW and I was wondering if any members have fairings on their XS1100's?
The bike has plenty of power so that wouldn't be a problem.
Just kinda wondering about how they handle with a fairing?
    Thanks.

Mine handles fine but I ride pretty easy compared to some. I need to replace the fork springs. I get a lot of dive when I apply the brakes.
79 F full cruiser, stainless brake lines, spade fuses, Accel coils, modded air box w/larger velocity stacks, 750 FD.

      Hey Leggman,

A lot of folks like and use FULL FAIRINGS, others don't like them because they do add weight, and block your view of the road close to the bike, but you're experienced with a FAIRING so it might not bother you. And though the bike does have a decent amount of power, it does take some away from it having to push the thing thru the wind.

Another alternative is a handlebar mounted windscreen, see through, lightweight, and will still keep the wind off your chest/face without putting as much weight/stress/wind resistance compared to a full fairing. YMMV.

I have a SlipStreamer on mine. Photo borrowed from 129slayer.com of our ride at XSSE 2017 on the DRAGON!

XS11 handles great with a fairing if the bike is properly set up.
        Forks / Shocks / Tires

For any Long Distance / All Weather riding it is the only way to travel. Rain - Snow - Hail or Sleet.
        Just ATGATT and Ride ...............

As I recall, the Pacifico weighed 32 pounds and I had Traxxion Dynamics calculate that extra weight into the calculations for the setting up the Emulators and Custom Wound Springs.

fwiw: actually it seems the fastest xs11 guys in the technical bad boy twisties seem to all have fairings.

The XS11 was designed with a fairing in mind and handle well with one installed, with proper mountings and set-up procedures.

In 79 I ran my fully faired XS11 from San Diego to Toronto Canada in four days (had a girl to see) then spent two weeks coming back, across Canada then down the Pacific coast.

The XS11 is studly enough to handle most anything you can hang on it.

go fairing and dont look back

I second all the members responses, a frame mount fairing will handle the best in windy situations, but a handlebar mount is about the same protection and handling except in high speed, cross wind. Frame mount fairings-vetter are pretty abundant-ebay or craigslist, the mounts are a bit harder to come by for the xs11 but are around. I prefer the frame mount, not only for protection, but also because its solid and doesnt move or rattle. The fairings and mount should be available for under 200 total,,,,,,,,,,,,,a new large handlebar mount is about the same- slipstreamer,,,,,,,good luck< Mike in Sun Diego

I have one of each. My naked bike used to have one, too, but I sold it off. I prefer not having one for all the local stuff, and during the summer weather. But, for highway or any distance riding I'd find the fairing more comfortable (Vetter Windjammer, with lowers and bags as well).

I agree with you. It is more difficilt to find a suitable bar mount for a standard. It seems that the seat is higher relative to the bars. Also the angle with the forks looks a bit off for me. This may have something to do with the taller tank?If I recall, I think I had a plexistar III. Watch out for hardware clearing the tank when the bars are fully turned!

                  1981 Venturer Fairing

This is my fav on the XS11 The 1981 Venturer fairing with a lower than stock smoked shield. Best fairing I have ever ridden behind.

If you can find a Pacifico('78 only), it is the best in my book. I've had both the Vetters and the Pacifico on my bikes, and the protection is better with the Pacifico, as is the top speed! I also like the mount Yamaha had for them, though they are getting hard to find. When I went from one to the other on the same bike, gas consumption was about 4mpg better with the Pacifico, even though it is slightly wider overall.
JeffH has the Pacifico on his bike, see photo.

I don't like faring because all of them are too low and make wind buffeting worse. Extra tall windshields cost too much for me to bother trying.
