Finally got my coils in, after I had to move the bike on the back of a Ryder truck to the new house. I ordered them from Cyclepages.com: great pricing, crummy service. It was about a month before I got them, but they sure charged my credit card within a day of my order! Anyway... I've seen the tech tips for the dyna conversion and it has great pictures. Would anyone who has done the ACCEL upgrade be willing to send me pictures? I would appreciate it greatly.

I have the Accel coils on my 78E.. and running with the ballast resistor... I have probably 12,000 miles on iit like that.
?1... why pull the balast resistor with those coils... and two... do you just hook the two ballast resistor wires together after you remove it?Shawn

Well, Sawn,
The Accel coils are designed to work on 12v, whereas the stock Yammy coils are designed to work on 9v. The resistor drops the voltage from 12 to 9.
You remove the resistor so you get a full 12 volts through the primary windings for maximum spark. Remove the resistor and solder the wires together. Unless, of course you have designs on going back to stock coils. In that case, clip them together. Stock coils MUST have the resistor or you risk frying the TCI box.
Post back and tell us about the difference and how much more responsive the throttle is.

Thanks for the reply Randy. I was going to pull the ballast resistor when I swap them out. Would you consider the resistor a way to achieve impedance matching with the output of the TCI? McIntosh hi-fi amps use transformers after their output transistors to achieve a more constant load on the transistors. This is more of a DC pulse, I assume, hence the resistor. I wonder why they didn't wind the coils to "fit" the TCI if this is the case. Anyway, I'm actually looking for mechanical mounting ideas for the ACCEL's, instead of using a hose clamp. If I need to, I'll just "zip-tie" them for now and make/weld up some mounts over the winter.2010 Kawasaki Z1000

Hey Jeff,
20-309 in the DK catalog, just remember to get the ones for Inductive pickups or points, with 3.0 ohms, not the CDI ones with only 0.7ohms Primaries! HTH.

My bike is STILL in the garage awaiting the coil transplant. A plumbing incident in the upstairs bathroom in the new (old) house led me to install a new kitchen ceiling. AAAARRRGH! Does anyone have extra spare time they can sell me? I need some badly!2010 Kawasaki Z1000
