  • What's this?

Now that I got this bike (82 XJ1100) running good, it's time I find out what some of this stuff is. Since I don't have an owners manual I hope you all can help.

    1) The ignition switch has Off, On, P1, and another P1. What are the P1's?

    2) The top of the forks have a dial with the numbers 1 thru 4. I assume this is for stiffness, what are the adjustments?

    3) Is there not a way to lock the fork when the bike is parked. I had a Honda years ago and there was a fork lock. I haven't found one on this bike, although I do have 3 keys for it and I only know where 2 of them go, ignition/gas tank and seat lock.

    Thanks,
    Phill

The P1 is for parking lights, and the fork lock is on the left side of the streeing head, isn't it Jerry?

Yeah, I'm just trying to remember the difference between the 2 P1 settings. Fork lock is on the left fork...I have a Vetter on my XJ so never use it. Dials on the forks (also the rear shocks) are for damping adjustments. There was a recent thread on these including suggested settings:

I recall that on one of the P1 settings the turn lights (front and rear) turn on while ignition system is off. Will have to check and see what the stated difference is. Little-known fact: the XJ (and earlier '81 XS) have emergency 4-way flashers. Switch is on the right handlebar below starter button.

The 4 way flasher switch on my bike is on the left side, below the horn button, but I know you know that.

78E also has a helmet lock, but all locks on mine use the same key. There is a chain (locking) mentioned in 82 manual, maybe it's still there.

            Third key

If you check behind the right(?) side panel, you should see a small plastic box, which originally housed a stock lock n chain. It may even be still there, although mine wasn't. This is probably what the third key is/was for.

              Thanks

Thanks guys. I found the fork lock and the four way flashers (on the right side for mine).
