  • Tire sizes and conversion charts

    I need the correct metric conversion for a 4.50-17 (rear), and a 3.50-19 (front). I checked a couple of charts and they listed two metric sizes for the rear. I am not going to mention what tyre type I am considering, least I get accused of starting a tire or oil thread<

    I know the front is a 90-90 19, but a 100 WILL fit a standard or special, just have to install partially deflated.
    The rear. 4.50-17, should be a 120 or 130, depending on tire brand. Raised letters WILL be a 120. On SOME brands, a 140 MIGHT fit, but check the mfg. specs for actual with of tire.

      100/90-19 is most correct. 90 too small. 130/90-16 for rear. 120 won't get you the proper weight rating. I learned all that right here.

        Hey Marty,

        You missed that he has a Standard with the 17" rear, not the 16 of the special.

        Regrettably the 17" rears are getting rather rare, especially in the aspect ratios that our bikes are supposed to be with the 120 or 130/90 - 17" .

        I just quickly checked on JP cycles/motorcycle-superstore and they show that the 120/90-17 is the 4.50 size, the 130/90-17 is the 5.00 size, and hopefully it will fit within the swingarm.

        For the Specials the 130/90 -16 is the stock size, but folks have been able to put 140/90-16's in blackwall but is dependent on brand, but some have had rubbing on the swingarm, so the 130 is the safe bet for the 16, but not sure about the 17. With the same aspect ratio, it the same brand should be the same width, and so theoretically the 130/90-17 should fit the standard without rubbing.

        As for the front, yes, 100/90-19 fits, but folks have also been able to fit 110/90-19's as well.YMMV.

          Yeah, I posted from work after a H3LL day! 11 hours AFTER a horrible commute to work didn't help... I thought I had put a 110 on the front and a 140 on the rear, but from memory and fried at that, I guess I was off a bit. Just wanted to be off on the low side, NOT a high side!

            The Dunlop D404 looks like a solid match for the standard. I'm going to buy a set. The rear 130-90-17 is rated 130mph for speed, and 697 pounds for load, which is over what's required.

                130/90-17 will fit and you should have a proper weight rating. A 120 widdr tire may have trouble with the load.

                  Hey Craig/Throttle,

                  Hope you haven't already ordered the D404's. Many folks have tried them and found that they just aren't tough enough to hold up to the weight and stress/torque that the XS11 puts out, despite their weight rating. Tire manufacturers have been going to softer compounds for better traction and performance, but at the cost of durability/longevity.

                  That's why many have decided to go with the SHINKO brand, folks get essentially the same mileage as the 2+ times costlier Dunlop E3's. But it's your $$, and your time changing tires after ~6-8K for the rear, fronts usually last 2x the rear.

                    In my experience the D404 is an adequate tire for the XS11.
                    Sadly it does nothing really well.
                    I liked the Bridgestone Spitfire until the price went up considerably. Also had good luck with the Shinko 712 which felt comfortable in the wet. Low cost means it is not a high mileage tire but it performed very well on my Standard.

                        I've been researching tires, since I'm going to need them too, and I've seen a few complaints of front end wobble on the 712. I'm considering the 777s. Any opinion on those?

                          I have never tried the 777. I have had the out of round problem with the front 712 twice and had to send them back. I now have been running the 230 with no out of round problems, YMMV

                            Metric Conversions

                            Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. I am looking forward to some new rubber. The front is still OK, but I am going to change both and be done with it.

                              Post which tires you bought. I'm going to order 2 soon. I was going with the D404 but am now having 2nd thoughts!
