  • She's running again

After sitting more than 6 years, I finally have had the time to work on her again. I took the carbs apart, cleaned them, replaced the float needle sets, bench synced them, then put them on.

I rebuilt the petcocks, cleaned the tank, replaced some vacuum line that was cracked, cleaned a few things up, put some gas in the tank, a charged battery, and cranked her over. She fired right up, but was running poorly.

The idle was too high, and I think 1 1/2 turns on the mixture screw was too lean. I lowered the idle and set the screws at, if I recall, 2 1/2. I got out my Morgan Carbtune and synced the carbs as best I could. It's really hard to get them perfect. I first synced 4 to 3, then 1 to 2, then 1 and 2 to 3. It seemed pretty close.

I took her for a run up and down the highway. At first, she was really having a hard time off idle, stalling out a bit. Once at medium to full throttle she was absolutely screaming. I forgot how fast she is. Really put a smile on my face. I mean, I was doing 85 in the blink of an eye.

There's more work to do, though. There's an intermittent fueling issue where she seems to get super rich for a moment, and boggy. Then it goes away and she's back to running excellent. Not sure what that's about. I'll be working on her again tomorrow, trying to get the mixture screws set better. I have a hard time "hearing" the idle change on 4 cylinder bikes. Not a problem on my XR650.

The carbs are synced perfectly, the bike idles beautifully, but it won't take throttle well. If you slowly crack it open, it will die. I feel like the mixture screws are rich, but I cannot do the "by ear" thing. It's just not working for me. Argggghhhh.....

Funny how often times we forget the crap in the tank that slowly evaporated leaving this dissolving varnish (subjected to fresh fuel) to enter the fuel system and causes for weeks a series of clean the carbs (runs good for a short time) clean the carbs, Oh it's good now, clean the carbs, jee I think I got it this time, clean the carbs, what the H e double hocky sticks is going on, clean the carbs WTF clean the carbs ? ? ? Gotta get that crap in the tank out, out, OUT OUT OUT !!!!!
Your favorite fuel system cleaner left to sit in the tank mixed with throw away fuel (don't use this crap in any other engine). Once the entire fuel system is clean start tuning for riding. JMHO

The tank was perfectly clean and dry, with fresh gas. This isn't a tank issue, it's something weird with carb #3. It needs over 4 turns out on the mixture screw, not sure why. Situation developing...

If, when having carbs apart, if you didn't remove idle mixture screws and REPLACE those tiny O-rings with new CORRECT ones,(fuel proof not fuel resistant) that is the issue bike is having.

She is REAL close right now. Running like a raped ape, but a slight stumble just off idle.
