  • torsion spring # 27

Is there another source for # 27 spring, torsion ?
Seems the shift lever on my LH is just flopping around, all the gears can be found if I play around with it.
It's not going to be safe on the road until this is remedied !
    Thank You, Don'e

    Torsion spring #6

Read up a bit more and realized the problem is probably the #6 torsion spring. Hard to believe that would break but maybe something came loose causing the spring to not return the shift shaft into position. Now I want to get in there right away and find out !!!!!

That happened to a friends bike a few years back and it turned out that a washer out of place in that shaft had allowed the racheting fork (#28) to slip out of place and not catch the pins on the shift drum.

Could be a pin starting to slip out also.

Is it happening in just 1 gear or all gears.

A weak pedal return spring can cause the same condition.

          Thank You Greg !
Yes, I can play with it and get it into all 5 gears and neutral but it is always sloppy, about an inch more play than normal and very loose.
Since none of those springs are the exact number I wonder which might fit ?
But I'm jumping the gun here so to speak, tomorrow I'll get it apart and report back what I find going on in there ?

Sounds like the return spring, not broken but weak. Had that happen on the SF I had a while back.

              Found

Well ,,,,,,,, went to the bar where the bike was hidden in the back to check out the SS and the bike was gone.
Knowing the thieves would not drive it far because of the shifting issue I circled the area, sure nuf 3 blocks up and 2 blocks over it was parked on the street, that's as far as they made it.
They jammed a screwdriver into the ign. scratched the tank and the left muff but it's back home now, JEEEEEEEZ ?

Complete A-Holes! Well, I hope the scratch in the tank is not too deep and can be fixed with polishing compound.

Tank will need re-paint, muff was done in high heat wrinkle so no biggy there, key no longer fits in the ign. but still turns on and off just can't insert it far enough to lock the front forks anymore. Still need to check out the shifting issue.
Thanks for the best wishes Skids !

                        Ouch....

A loose shifter doesn't really sound like springs to me but you haven't cracked open the cover yet and could be a while before you get a 'tuit -- the suspense is killing me!

If there are no loose nuts, screws or washers in the shifter assembly and the shift drum doesn't try to crawl out of the case to the left when you shift, make sure the dots are aligned on the two shift lever 'gear' teeth and the index marks are aligned on the shift drum and pawl when the transmission is in 2nd gear. If the shifter's just slipped or out of adjustment then you may not need any springs or parts.

DiverRay found a new return spring in Texas, there's another one in Georgia that's listed too:-

YAMAHA NEW 90508-29361 1989-1993 YZ490/WR500 Shift Shaft Spring OEM

I have some used pawl springs that are still good, the pawl doesn't need a lot of tension, gravity will mostly hold it in place but it's there so the pawl stays seated on the shift drum dowels when you're riding and shifting.

Judging from the way the shift lever travels much further than normal and is sloppy, something like the spring is broken, some part out of place, or just unscrewed ?

The part number's not right. The pictures show the 'legs' are clocked differently and I can't tell the wire gauge from the pictures. (shrug) If I had to guess, 90508 is the Yamaha number for shift return springs and the second part is the application:

90508-32263-00 is the $1.99 spring from your link and it'd be a hoot if it worked with just some tweaking to fit it and set the tension.

90508-29361-00 is the correct spring for ~$17 from Texas or ~$11 from Georgia.

I have a few of those used springs too, they were working when I pulled the engines.
