I have a question about side covers and year fitment.

I have a set on 81 special side covers, Would they fit a 79 Special?

    Sorry

Nope- I have both bikes and the cover attachments are quite different.

Top catches are different, but bettin' it'll work even though a lot of pieces like tupperware etc. were specific to the 79Special.

        Hi tcoop,
        a perfect fit, nah.
Could they be modified so they'd stay in place and not look too much like orphans?
        Maybe.
As I remember, the 79 Special covers both have slots at the top while the right-side cover had a dog's dick at it's lower center
and the left-side cover had a latch that's held by a lock
My '80's side covers both have a hole and a slotted hole at the top and their lower centers are the same as a '79's.
What I'd try is see if the '81's lower fittings are compatible with your '79's.
If that looks good, Dremel the holes in the 81 covers into slots that fit your '79.

'79 and '80/'81 side covers are not the same shape. The '79 cover won't go on the '80. If you modify the '80 to fit the '79, the top of the cover will not follow the bottom edge of the seat. The gap will widen toward the rear. It's not worth the effort.

            Hi Marty,
nobody said perfect, eh? And a '79 leftside cover fits OK on my '80 after I'd worked it over a bit.
Will an '81 cover work on a '79? I dunno but perhaps it's worth a try?
If the not quite right sidecovers will stay in place is it worth having covers that don't line up instead of having no covers at all?
            I reckon that's coop's call to make.

My last sentence, "It's not worth the effort." is strictly my opinion.

Thanks Marty. That's what I was thinking. The only 79 I've had was a parts bike. Frame cut in half no seat or exhaust but pretty much everything else. So I had nothing to compare them too.

I have a 79 right side cover you can have I got it by accident for nearly nothing. I was hanging onto it because I like the black/gold paint and thought I might try to get it matched one day, but that's never going to happen, and I have grown to like the black/red on my SG better anyway.

whatever it costs to ship from NYC UPS (my post office is a nightmare, sorry) and it's yours.

Thanks for the offer but actually I don't need any side covers. I was looking to sell my extra set but wanted to make sure the fit. Sebastian_99 needed the Left side cover (his keeps braking) but seeing how they don't fit properly it's a no go.
