  • LH Side cover removal

Hey so I'm trying to get my LH side cover off so I can paint it and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas to removing it without the key....I have no Idea why my doesn't fit. I have lubed it up and screwed around with it but I don't want to break it!
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers!

Key only goes in that lock a tiny ways, then twist. I'd try just spraying a bunch of WD40 in there then insert key and try rocking key back and forth to maybe free things up internally. Have never had that issue, so have no other 'trick' suggestions. Just avoid braking that plastic latch!

      Hi Tim,
I'd forgotten about that quaint little keyed latch because it's been so long since, as my battery & toolkit live in the sidecar these days, I'd needed to remove the left-side cover.
OK then, is this the first time you've tried to work that latch?
It's supposed to work with the bike's ignition key.
The key goes in vertically and only about half way.
It's supposed to turn 90ยบ towards you to un-latch the side cover
Did you get a second different key when you got the bike?
If you've been PO'd and the latch needs a key you don't have
or if the latch is irretrievably too full of crud to turn you can
use a right-angle drill to drill the lock's wards out so a screwdriver
      will work it.
If even a screwdriver won't turn it, saw through the cover's latch plate
ear, remove the cover, dismantle & fix the latch now that you can get at it
then re-attach the sawn off lug with an aluminum plate and pop rivets
(You are going to re-paint it anyway, right?)

        Hey Guys!
thanks for the input! I was using the ignition key(s) and I have had it off in the past so I don't know what has changed....BUT I managed to open the lock with the key for the ignition of my boat! I had to get it in there just right but it turned it like it was made for it! the ignition key(s) wouldn't do it, even after I fiddled with it and lubed it really well... so, I will just have to keep the boat key around...great excuse to keep the boat right? lol!
        Cheers!

Since you got cover off, I highly recommend you remove that lock assembly from the cover and drop the whole thing in a small cut of Evapor-Rust for a few hours. Remove and wash out with water and blow-dry. Might be surprised when it now easily rotates when ignition key is installed.

Oh, that's what that thing is . Didn't get a left side cover so I didn't know.
                All makes sense now.
I did get a full tool set though.
                Thanks
