    Xs1100 shift lever does nothing

I recently got my 1980 Xs11 running and a few blocks from my house, while going from 2nd to 3rd, it popped into neutral. I pulled over and the shift lever moves up or down but will not shift gears. It stays in neutral. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    you'll

need to remove the shift lever and pull the cover off. Could be the springs are not returning the mechanism. Show us a picture when you get the cover off. Work off the center stand. To check the alignment dots it needs to be in second gear but hard to do if the lever isn't working. There are some c clips in there that may have come off and allowed the shaft to slide out a bit so the mechanism isn't meshing.

My initial bet is one of the pins has fallen out due to the star washer having a bent retaineing ear. As stated, pull that left shift cover to inspect that that has happened. If so, that retaining ear on the the star washer, if straightened back WILL just break off.

I can't figure out how to post pics so I will try to describe it. The arm on the shift shaft which has teeth in it broke off. I welded it back together and welded some extra material to it for strength. It works fine now.
