  • Airbox and snorkel questions

The snorkel is somewhat caved in where it seals to the airbox. Will an XS1100 snorkel be a drop-in replacement for an XJ1100 snorkel? A cursory look at eBay tells me they are not identical.

Is there a DIY replacement solution for a caved in snorkel?

I have the airbox out and apart for inspection and cleaning. Is there an effective way to remove the smell from the inside of the airbox? I worked on it with shop towels and Goo Gone. Its cleaner but the overpowering smell remains.

Assemble the air box so it won't distort and soak it in a bucket of hot water with Pine-Sol, Lysol, or WhateverIsInTheGarage-Sol. Don't boil it, just let it soak and stir it every now and then until it's clean.

What's wrong with the snorkel? Is it physically damaged or just out of shape so it won't go back in the hole and seal correctly? If it's whacked, it's made out of molded rubber so it wants to go back to its original shape. Put it in the pot with the air box until it softens, then pull it out and stuff it with rags, newspapers or something to stretch it back into shape and let it stay there after it cools.

Those snorkels on both carb side and air-box side rotate a bit so as to align correctly in both locations.

Yes out of shape. If it were a coronary artery, it would be a candidate for a stent. Its not horrible. Just not perfectly sealed. A miniature turnbuckle would be a perfect stent for this snorkel.

        Thanks for the tips.

          You're welcome.

Yamaha used some glue on the XJ snorkel, it was a stringy yellow/amber like contact cement or weather strip adhesive but that black urethane window sealer would be better.

Get the snorkel mostly back in shape and clean it with acetone or alcohol to get rid of any oil or grease, then run a bead of urethane sealer in the snorkel's airbox groove and fit the snorkel into place in the air box.

Make sure both sets of 'lips' on the snorkel aren't tucked under or stuck in the groove, then pack a rag in the snorkel to hold it open and square in the air box while the urethane sets up.

After the urethane cures, the snorkel should stay open and in the air box unless you go medieval on it or try to use it as a hand grip and do those fancy rodeo kicks for style and points while you ride.

Don't forget to remove the rag.
