Man, I cannot remember where I put the other YICS tool. I got one from Chacal on the XJ site and one from Larry to see which one worked better. I only got one use out of the first tool before it shredded so I hope the second one with the o-rings works better, I don't want to spend another couple of hours fishing and vacuuming pieces rubber out of the manifold.-- Scott

Scott, maybe you can get better consistency with the IR gun if you aim further down on the headpipes where the hot gases might be better mixed...Skids (Sid Hansen)

I actually got better consistency aiming right next to the head by the collar and nuts. Further down the pipe gave odd readings but I'll see if I can figure out what's going on, it might be a bad IR gun.
Yahman's blanking tool was still in the saddlebags with the tire irons from the Memorial Day weekend ride.
I've left this picture full size for the instructions.
There's no lever like the OEM Yamaha or Chacal's tool, just oil it up and go for the gusto.

IR gun
I've being using this method as well since 2010. My hearing is so bad that the lean drop method is not available to me and the colour tune was ok but I could never get my plug colours all the same. So I started using the ir gun after a sync and watched the plugs over several rides. From the front I put the dot on the apex of the first bend. My E and SF have a variance on the two inner cyliders because of the emulsion tubes, so I allow them to be 10 degrees cooler and the plugs are all very close in colour.mack

Ruh Roh, Raggy!
You know, if this keeps up I'm going to start a new thread. Mack, I'll try putting the IR dot on the "knee" of the pipe and see what I get.
I can't run the engine yet, I ran the battery down a little doing a cold compression test and it's still in the Bulk charging mode but I got Yahman's YICS blanking tool installed. The fuel tank's sitting outside until I'm ready for it but the vacuum gauges are reconnected so it's ready to go whenever the Smart Charger finishes smartly charging the battery.
COLD cylinder compression is between 155 and 160 pounds but the right-hand cylinders are running rich.
The stuff's just falling off 'em.

If this was the bike that you put the IR gun to work on, which pipes were hotter ? ? ?
I seem to remember when a cylinder is running lean enough the pipes don't heat up as much as cylinders that are running correctly or richer, Yes ?76 XS650 C ROADSTER

#1 and #2 were running hotter than #3 and #4.
The charger is finished, time to quit lollygagging and get cracking!

It worked.
I didn't make any video or take pictures but the IR gun did help me set the mixture screws. Larry's YICS blanking tool came out of the manifold without tearing anything so no fishing for o-rings today.
I'm going to just ride it for a while and check the temperature with the IR gun. I'll pull the plugs sometime later to see if the color is alright but it's smoothed out. 1&2 were just starting to backfire out the exhaust really badly on overrun/decel and the resynch got rid of that and the muttering.-- Scott
