Could use some help troubleshooting this ignition issue. Any Suggestions”?

Yamaha XS1100 1978 original owner 71000 km low yearly usage
Issue- not firing even when added with ether
History – replaced regulator 3 years back
Since then has fired up on first crank even with over-winter gas in tank
Only ridden about 150 miles this year
Recent has been harder to start- need to crank for 30-60+seconds
Keep voltage up with external battery charger for good cranking

This week, would not fire at all even when using ether- very unusual
Related observation- had gas in breather when I removed it-
Have not been able to identify from which carb the gas was flowing back into breather from
Suspect this is a separate issue.
Other issue was it has been recently hard to idle- had to keep rev’s up but if it stalled it restarted ok
Does this indicate low spark energy at low rpm?

Pulled plugs and checked for spark from plug to block when cranking
Plugs seem to have reasonable spark.

Do have concerns about the age of the high voltage plug wires- but since they are firing seems ok.

So what can cause a motor that was starting and running ok to not fire at all.
    a) Presence of spark seems to indicate the ignition system is functioning.
Plan B is to replace the two ignition modules but expensive for an old bike.
Is there a recommended after-market ignition module for xs1100? (suggested supplier)
    b) Presence of spark seems to indicate the wiring to ignition system is ok – will check all connections further
    c) Change spark plugs

    To do:
    a) More spark plug wiring checks and comparison across the 4 cylinders
    b) Double check all connections
    c) Check ballast resistor
    d) Check throttle engine stop switch
    e) Check tip-over switch
    f) What else

    Carbs too

If you have a spark and the plugs look reasonable, maybe you want to pull the pull the plugs off of the bottom of the fuel bowls and see if any particles come out. This would be a easy check to see if there an obvious problem that would cause plugged enricher (choke) passages and/or partially plugged pilot jets.

If these things were plugged or partially plugged, we would expect to see your symptoms.

Also might explain a leaky float needle valve.

Peter, welcome to our site. Your problems are familiar with some of us, so I hope I can give you a few things to look for/repair.
#1, HOW OLD IS THE BATTERY? I know for a fact that if the battery has a bad cell, even with a good battery hooked up it will NOT fire. Check your voltage with a VOM at rest (12.5V), and if you have a helper, while you crank. Remember, the bike WILL NOT FIRE if you drop below 10.5V.
#2. Check your pickup coil wires. http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=543 This is the link for the repair, and it also tells how to look for bad wires.
#3. Fuel running into the airbox. Are you trying to start it on the sidestand? That can sometimes cause problems. If you do have a leaking carb, best go through them and check for sticking floats, pinholes in a float, and float height on the 4 carbs. Not that much work, and it should be done about every 4 years anyway.http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76
Hope this gives you something to look at, and at least a start point.

+1 on this about the battery. I could not get mine to start at the beginning of the season, even when jumped to the truck battery(truck not running, of course). Engine would turn over and pop here and there, but no start. I was afraid I had coil issues. I put in an new batt, and POW, Galaxy fired right up.
