  • stainless brake lines for 82 XJ1100

I've read through several of the posts on stainless lines and couldn't find a real concencus on lines for the 82 XJ1100. I think this must be my problem - real stiff handle and little brake response. I rode my brothers v-star tonight (with stainless lines) and WOW what a difference - accidentally locked the front wheel coming to a stop.

How much and where could I get them? I think Randy is selling for XSs but not sure about XJ. Anyone who fabricates them still out there??? Or am I best to take my lines into a Harley dealer and match them up and make them myself? Never made them so I don't know what's involved.

    Thanks guys / gals.

Randy made mine for an xs1100e. It really does not matter what bike. He just needs the length and angle of banjo. You will love them.
There's always a way, figure it out.

      SS Brake Lines

Randy made up a set for one of my bikes as well. Very satisfied. Quality good looking product. Just had to wait 2 weeks. It may be faster now. Randy has his XS on the road now. Of course if he is not wrenching on it he may be out riding. Tee Hee

Yes, I'm on the road now, thanks in a big way to all of you guys.

Any size you want, I can make. Just need the measurements. Measure twice, because I cut once!

I'm still running two weeks lead time on the lines, but to be honest, I expect that lead to increase as the summer gets in full swing.

Besides, It's no easy task to fabricate lines after a hard days' riding. My arms are tired from holding on!!

Thanks again for all the great advice.

        Randy

If you are in a real hurry, you may find someone locally to do them. I found out that a local place here (Super Dave's in Masontown PA) can make them up on the spot. Perhaps check the yellow pages for independent bike shops. I sent mine to a place in CA (CycleBrakes.com) to be duplicated. They are actually manufactured by a Co called Galfer whose home base is Spain but there's a branch in CA. I got the black plastic coverings with gold anodized banjos to go with the Midnight. They can do all sorts of colors. Cost on them with shipping was about 200 bucks plus I had to pay to ship them the old ones for a pattern. Have'nt installed yet but they look great.
Having said that, I don't think you will find a better price or product than Randy's. If he could have done mine in black, that's where I would have got them. Plus he's a member and a good guy

Remember the XJ lines are quite different than the XS lines. Back line is about the same, but front left caliper is tied to rear master cylinder; there is a short line off the m/c proportioning valve to a hard line that runs under the gas tank, then another soft line from the left caliper to a union with the hard line. Union is just below the tripple-T. Front right caliper line runs directly from the caliper to the front m/c.

Some owners have converted the XJ 'linked' system to the XS standard system. There are previous threads on this if you do a search on XJ brakes. Some people have replaced the 3-piece set-up (soft, hardline, soft) with either a 2-piece or 1-piece line. 2-piece is a ss line that connects to the proportioning valve, runs under the tank, and forms a union with another ss hose that runs from the caliper to a union with the under-tank hose. A 1-piece would run the whole distance without any unions. The set I have opted for the 2-piece solution.

Alas, I did not keep my old lines when I did this conversion a few years ago. A former list member made these up, and had the measurements. Ideally, if someone has a junked XJ, they could pull all the lines and send them to Randy to use as templates. This would make sure the banjo angles and line length would be correct. Any volunteers?

                Randy

H i Randy i have a question, my proporitioning valve went bad on my Venture, so i did away with my linked brakes . I just hooked my right caliper to my left caliper with the exsisting rubber hose . Could you make a steel line with the fittings off an old brake line it would be u shaped and about 30 inches long ? I like the feel of the brake its just a little spongee as i have too much rubber hose now. Other than that great brakes it will lock the front wheel if need be , TIA........................MITCH

                    Interested Also

I'd also be interested in a set for my XJ100. Let me know if you find a template.

Sure, guys, anything can be fabricated, but I WILL NOT use old metal fittings, I will replace them with new. Send me the lines and I'll find the fittings to match. Fair enough? In this case, though, I can't promise a two week turnaround, OK? Maybe more like three.

chev454 - brake lines for XJ

                        Chev454 and Randy,

I bought a front brake switch from Chev a while back in which you sent me the whole front master with brake line. If you can find the back lines, I've got the front I'll send to Randy. Randy, let me know your address and I'll get it shipped out. Chev - the switch and master cylinder you sent me WAS for an 82 XJ right?? Oh and guess what - I've got alternator problems again....
