  • Clutch slippig still

Okay about a year ago I purchased a 1981 xs1100 red color bike. I started getting on the throttle and it started slipping so I went and purchased a clutch on eBay everything can in one kit so I installed that and its still slipping in the high end when I goose on it. So I read on here about adding a steel to the clutch basket and now all it does is jam in to gear in pull ahead. Now all I'm left with is taking the extra steel plate out and buying new springs am I correct? But why is the extra steel making the clutch grab and not realesing when I pull the lever in. I wasn't gonna put the plate in but I did.

New friction plates are available OEM. Places like Partzilla sell them for about $10 each. It sounds like the eBay clutch is like a box of chocolates (you never know what you're going to get). Do us a favor and post what brand it is.

Were you able to properly adjust the clutch before/after you added the plate?

Sometimes the plates can wear grooves in the clutch basket and the steels and fibers can catch on those grooves.

I don't think you want a Barnett clutch. The stock one works fine. I have a lot of miles on mine.

              easy fix

Easy to fix,,,, I could guarantee there is so little room for the release of the clutch with the extra plate, I had tried it with same result,,,,,,,
              1. take out the extra plate asap
              2. measure the spring length, if ok reuse, if they are short, go to
              3. partsnmore- order the springs and plate set and you should be good to go for another 100,000 miles

I think he just means the springs Marty.

Does any one know what the specs are for the plates springs and steels? With a michrometer

What oil and additives are you running and are you CERTAIN it's properly adjusted?

I think the minimum number for frictions is 0.11 inch. IMO, the best way is to stack the plates (is it 8?) and put some compression near the point that you intend to measure and see if the collective thickness is correct. ie, if there are 8 plates, the minimum should be 0.88 inches. I cant remember the number of frictions or the number of the minimum for a friction, but you get the idea. If you have been using something like Mobile 1 synthetic, you may need to clean the plates (in gasoline?) if they have been slipping but still in spec. If the steels are glazed, it might help to radially sand them a little to rough them up. Springs can weaken over time as well.

Barnett clutch plates are NOT what you want, BUT Barnett clutch springs ARE what you need! even some of the "new" springs I've tried do NOT hold up. Barnett's, IMHO, work VERY well. For the fiber plates, stock seems to work best. As stated by skids, make sure the steel plates are not glazed.

The Manual specs for friction plate thickness is 3.00 mm/0.12in max, and 2.80 mm/0.11in min.
The spring range is 41.8mm min/1.646in, standard length 42.8mm/1.685in.

It doesn't state the Steel thickness, just the max warpage amount as 0.1mm/0.0039in

++for the Barnett springs, I used Vesrah and had to replace them just a few years later due to slippage despite full/max friction thickness.

Barnett springs and CORRECT clutch adjustment AT the clutch, not lever is all that's needed.
