Is aprox 4500 RPM at 70 MPH normal for an XS11 (80)? Seems like a lot of revs for only 70. Just got the bike on the road and was surprosed to see the high revs. This engine should be able to pull and maintain speed at half that RPM. If this is where it is designed to be that would explain only getting 30-35 MPG. Great group and a wealth of info.

    Yep, thats about right.

A much-discussed topic is how to lower cruising speed RPM. No good answer, since there are neither taller tires, lower final drive gear ratios, or a 6-speed conversion available. However, chain drive conversions are available, giving you the option of different final drive ratios by changing sprocket sizes. Very expensive and requires massive modifications since you eliminate the drive shaft.

one thing to note on the XS1100 is that peak Hp is near the 8000 rpm mark so 4500 is not high on the curve.
I have a bike and I am not afraid to use it
