I recommend that you do the pilot screws last. The reason is, if you set them prior to synching the vacuums on the carbs, subsequent synching will alter the mixtures that you worked so hard to get right.

I just had a thought, if your tank is really full of crud, it is very possible that the riser tubes inside and above the petcocks are partially plugged down low. They have a fine mesh screen on them and I have pulled some that had a lot of buildup. So if thats the case, you may just not be getting full use of your tank. It may be a long shot, but sometimes thinking simpler is better. At least it's easy to pull and check em. If your spark plugs are not real dark indicating too rich, it is really worth a look.Miles to Go, Fuel to Burn

Thanks very much for the suggestions. My tank is actually not bad - I have had it off and cleaned it. The screens on the risers were cleaned.
My plugs were black & sooty - I adjusted the idle mixture last night & following suggestions backed them out 1and 1/4 turns from a gentle seat - the plugs are now a light brown (better?) and performance didn't seem to be compromised ( the back tire spun when it hit 3000 or so). I took it for a quick test run, and ran out of gas on the way home. It was only about a 1/2 mile, but it was uphill - and these bikes are no fun to push. I didn't get to the floats last night - the bike seemed a bit better under 3000 rpm, but not yet right, so I will tackle the float adjustment tonight.
As a follow up to Ratbyk's suggestion on the fuel filters - where is the best place to put them? I assume it would be the line from the octopus to the carbs (?)Chlanna Nan Con Thigibh A So's Gheibh Sibh Feoil
