  • Electrical (not a HUGE deal) question on the SG

When I rev the engine, the headlight brightens a little bit. When I brake, it dims slightly. Sometimes my turn signal will stay on at idle, I'll rev, and it'll blink. Most of the time it stays blinking. Thoughts???

    Hi ERM83,
If you can keep all the lights working at the same time you are doing better than most of us The charging system was never strong on the XS11 and old wires and corroded connections cause voltage drop which is why your headlight dims. If the flasher resumes when you rev the engine you are in pretty good shape. Cleaning connections especially the grounds will help.
    Good luck.

Start going through connection by connection and get cleaning. The voltage of the system raises and lowers with rpms. If everything is nice and clean the turn signals will work no matter the rpm but there will still be a slight headlight dim/brightening but it will be barely noticable.

Basically though, it is voltage lost due to poor connections.

Or just old wiring. Mine does the same thing no matter how many switches and connections I clean. TS works fine though.

I found that raising the idle speed a bit helps solve a lot of little problems. Mine idles at 12 - 1300 FULLY warmed up.

Yep...that's EXACTLY what I do: warm it up initially, ride for a few minutes, then if the TS acts up, I raise the idle to about 1200, and it goes away.

Right on, guys...thank you!! I want to replace the reg/rec soon anyway, speaking of the charging system. You all have any preferences on those?? I was thinking about getting a Rick's...

It's my off day regardless...gonna take a LONG ride down River Rd. here. I wish y'all would stop through here on your way to one of the rallies...there's a BUNCH of fun / scenic routes in this city.

Tony is a member and has been building these for years. They work at lower RPM's, and will take more abuse without failing. Not really cheap, but it's what I've run in one bike, and I'll be buying another for the '78.
For my riding, it's down the central California Coast. San Fransisco to Big Sur and South once the road is open again...
