Yesterday, I called up my brother (V-star) and my buddy (Sportster) to se if they wanted to break me in on some twisty back roads. This is my first bike and I'm still very much in the learning stage but I thought what better way to learn to ride than to put the bike (and rider) through it's paces. We left at 10:00 am and ut on about 130 miles total. My 82 XJ performed pretty well, although a bit boggy bettween 2500-3500 RPM (may need to clean the mid range jets). Above 4000 RPM it ran like a top. Overall it was a great first ride. I figure I got about 40MPG which is pretty good for a 22 year old 4 cylinder muscle bike.
Tonight I wanted to go for a quick spin and got all dressed up the leather, helmet, etc... I started bike and noticed the tach wasn't working... I've been through this before so I checked the voltage of the battery while running - 12.1 - not charging. So I checked the repaired field coil and found the repair job needed to be repaired. I have another break in the coil. At least it happened in the driveway. So no riding this week as the field coil gets repaired or rewound.
